DVD Talk review of 'Severance'

I read Nick Lyons's DVD review of Severance at http://www.dvdtalk.com/reviews/read.php?ID=31218 and...

Couldn't disagree more, enjoyed the hell out of this movie.

Is the movie a slasher? A witty satire? Torture porn? Your guess is as good as mine. If screenwriter James Moran spent more time on reworking the script instead of worrying about appealing to fans of "Shaun Of The Dead" or "Hostel," the film may have had a better chance of working. Instead, it feels sloppy, incomplete, and dull.
Different strokes for different folks I guess. And I never once felt it was trying to appeal to the "Shaun of the Dead" crowd so much, and outside of one brief sequence, I don't even get the Hostel comparison. Horror comedies don't tend to be strictly comedy or strictly horror, as such most tend to slowly evolve from light comedies to actual horror movies, it succeeds as both. The movie isn't a laugh riot by any means, but it does have a leg up over most other films in either genre - the cast is actually likable.

same here. I likedthis movie. I thought the pie scene was actually one of the funnier parts. "it was wrapped in foil", "oh thats a relief". I really had fun with this, sorry you didn't.

Pretty good movie for me as well. Enjoyed the director's previous movie "Creep".

Creep was far better than Severance.

Severance is billed as a "horror comedy," but it's neither horrific nor comedic... it's just flat.

Yup I agree with you. This isn't horror-comedy like Shaun Of The Dead, it's grimmer, more shocking and considerably less amiable. And for me, the blend of dark humor and horror/gore elements worked (almost) perfectly.

Most people would disagree. Creep had it's moments but as hard as it tried to deliver a stylish horror film, it ultimately wasted a good premise with a criminally stupid lead character (and god knows I like Franka Potente) and by playing with every horror cliché in the book. Severance is fun, inventive, and a considerable improvement over Smith's first film.

I would agree with the OP. I thought Severance was a really fun ride from the beginning to end. Even my wife loved it, and she hates most horror comedies.
