Once again, the posters have totally lost track that this thread is not about "the French film you love most" but the best Crietrion release of a French film and the reasons why.

I must have missed the first post some how...but my choice stands.

As previously stated Playtime is an awesome movie. The transfer to me looks good and by the screens in the review much better (I did not own the previous version). The extras are fun too. Also for some people, a major selling point is the package. A nice foldout cardboard digi, with a whole lot of color. That makes Playtime a can't miss.

My personal top ten:

400 Blows
Army of Shadows
Band of Outsiders
Battle of Algiers
(fantastic array of extras on this one)
The Red Circle (surprised no one mentioned this one yet)
Eyes Without a Face
Jules and Jim
Playtime
Le Samourai
Shoot the Piano Player

I have no idea why everyone keeps mentioning 'Le Samourai' when the DVD is bare-boned by any stretch of the imagination. In no way could it be called the greatest of anything.

So have you decided which two you are going to get?

I have got 'The Rules of the Game' and 'Hiroshima Mon Amour'. Still looking for more Marcel Carne on DVD in general. His film "Le Visiteurs du Soir" is the best French film ever made IMHO.

A shame no one has mentioned Criterion's first, Grand Illusion. I liked all their Jean Gabin films but that one stands out.
