"Revenge" (Theatrical) vs. "Revenge" (DC)?
Was wondering if someone has had the opportunity to see both cuts and can compare them briefly? I've never seen the whole thing of the TE and was curious about revisiting. The DC has some 24 minutes dropped from the original which would imply a drastically different cut.
usually, i don't like such a drop off in time and wonder what i would be missing if i got the DC. any thoughts would be appreciated... |
There is a sticker on the new directors cut that says 10 minutes of new footage has been added. So, Tony Scott actually took out a full 34 minutes from the theatrical version and then added 10 minutes of new footage.

He took out mostly stuff of the characters backstories, which Scott was forced to shoot by the studio - to soften up the story. Now the story is more to the point, more intense, more sexual and moves faster. He had big fights with the studio, who wanted to analyse everything which ended up in reshoots. Now Scott has reinstated several original scenes (which works a lot better) and removed those reshot. Itīs more violent and has more sexscenes which makes this kind of story a lot better if you ask me.
Being a huge fan of the original I was suprised how well this cut works. As with Payback, I love both cuts - and they will sit side by side in my collection. Revenge is a stunningly beautiful movie. Itīs a great film. Both of them. |

I'm guessing the 2 hour theatrical version is Kevin Costner's cut.

By listening to Scottīs commentary, the 2 hour version is Ray Starkīs cut. Scott showed the directorīs cut to Kevin Costner a week before he recorded the commentary, and Costner loved it.
As with the sex, well Revenge is about forbidden love and sex is a huge part of it, itīs the reason for all that is happening. As Scott puts it, Revenge is not a lovestory, itīs a fuckstory. Well put Scott hehe. He seemed to know a lot about forbidden love as he was involved in a very similar situation (except for the revengepart) around that time. He didnīt say with whom though. But it was one of the reasons why he badly wanted to do this film. The commentary was interesting. And he called Stowe a sexy bitch (lovingly). I wondered sometimes if he had some beers before doing the commentary. |
