Lady Vengeance and Sympathy For...

From Ian Jane's review of Lady Vengeance.

NOTE: For some reason, Tartan Video has abbreviated the title of Chan-wook Park's Sympathy For Lady Vengeance and shortened it to simply Lady Vengeance. Personally, and for reasons that remain mysterious, that annoys the Hell out of this reviewer and so the film will be referred to in this review by its proper title just because.
What's funny about that is that if Mr. Jane actually did some research, he'd realize that the ACTUAL title of the film is THE KIND HEARTED MS. GEUM-JA, which is the title director Park Chan-Wook gave the film. His sales agency, the company that sellls the movie internationally, renamed the film Sympathy for Lady Vengeance for international purposes. They did to match up with Park's other film Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance, which was originally called VENGEANCE IS MINE, and therefore was not Park's title of choice either.

Saying that the REAL name of the film is "Sympathy for Lady Vengeance" is like saying the REAL name of SPL is the recent Weinstein namechange "Killzone."

So, if you want to be true to the director's vision, call the film "Kind Hearted Ms. Geum-Ja." You're not honoring Park Chan-Wook by reverting the title back to the inclusion of "Sympathy for...".

Is "THE KIND HEARTED MS. GEUM-JA" the title as it played in Korea, or just the director's original choice that never got used?

It is not an approved english title, it's simply the literal english translation of the Korean title "Chinjeolhan Geumjassi ". The international title is "Sympathy for Lady Vengeance". Referring to the film's title as ""THE KIND HEARTED MS. GEUM-JA" in a review would be meaningless. As a reviewer, I might use it in a sentence like:

Park Chan-wook's "Sympathy for Lady Vengeance" ("Chinjeolhan Geumjassi " which translates to "The Kind-Hearted Ms. Geum-ja") is the Korean director's...

But then again different reviewers would handle this differently.
