'Once Upon A Time In The West' - good blind buy?
I like Leone's Eastwood westerns, but have never had the chance to see this - I've read the reviews here on DVD Talk and other sites that seem positive and on others that say the movie is over-long, drawn out boring in spots, so I don't know which way to jump. Our local ShopKo has a two disc edition for $7.99. Now I'll leave it in the hands of my DVD Talk brethren...
Get it -or- Pass?

Buy it. If you like Leone's other westerns, then I'm sure you'll like OUATITW. It's actually my favorite of the group, and everytime I see it, I think I like it a little bit more.

Don't even think, just get it. If you like the Eastwood flicks, you'll love this one as well. I'm constantly torn over which is better, OUATITW, or GBU. The leads in OUATITW strike me as somewhat of a poor man's version of the 3 leads in GBU, but I think overall it's a better film, as it's not quite as meandering as GBU.
Bottom line is, for 7.99 this DVD is a steal. You will not regret picking it up.

This was a blind buy for me, and I certainly don't regret it. An incredible price for a two-disc edition, and when the movie was over I knew it was one of the best westerns I'd ever seen, a classic of the genre.
I had seen some of Leone's other work beforehand, so I was pretty confident it would be something I'd enjoy.
I say give it a try. Wonderful movie.

I didn't care much for Westerns until a few years ago. This movie gave me a new appreciation for the genre. An excellent movie, worth many times its asking price.

I love Leone's other westerns and really disliked this movie. The story is just not very interesting and the movie drags badly. I bought this DVD and quickly sold it. However, its very inexpensive to buy so there is really no reason not to take a chance on it since some people seemed to enjoy it.

The opening of this movie is my favorite of all westerns. The bit with the fly and the barrel of the gun. I chuckle every time I see it.
I also think that Harmonica's (Bronson) eye close ups are better than Blondie's (Eastwood).

gotta say this is one of leone's best westerns. its not really a typical western/hollywood/blockbuster ytpe of movie. its more conceptual and artistic (ergo the complaints of boring spots).
dont hate me!

Nobody's even mentioned the extras, which are quite good. Commentary from a number of parties on the movie, including big fan John Carpenter, three documentaries (really one long one but broken up into three because license fees are higher for docs over 30 minutes, I believe), the original theatrical trailer, and a very nice brand-new trailer. A great scene in one of the documentaries is
The opening sequence
is really one of the best of any movie ever IMHO. And the second sequence
is incredible as well.

It should be a crime to sell this film for so cheap. For $7.99 you shouldn't even think twice. It's an amazing film, awesome Morricone score, superb cast and a great disc. It's one of my top 5 films of all time so I couldn't possibly recommend it enough.
