Wolf Creek - is it a good blind buy?
 

I was curious as to whether Wolf Creek (unrated of course) is a good blind buy. There is a review here at dvdtalk which recommends it, but that is all I could find. I welcome your input.

I liked it alot.
It takes a while to get going, which I didn't mind, but some people think it's boring.
If you're into these kind of movies I say 'go for it!'

It doesn't take a long time to get going....It's called setup & suspense, and it's very important to this film. It's better to not know it "takes a while" to get started, as that's part of the fun.....but since that's been spoiled already, oh well....Anyway, the less you know about it, the better off you'll be.

If you enjoy horror flicks, this should be right in your league.

You've got a point but it's the one thing most people complains about.
I knew it going in and it didn't ruin the experience at all.

I rented this one just because Ebert hated it so much I knew it had to have something interesting going for it. It is a really nice story about 3 travelling companions and their relationships and adventures - FOR ABOUT AN HOUR - then, WATCH OUT...no spoilers here, it just gets nasty.

A little slow at the beginning but definitely worth it.

It's not worth buying but it's worth a rental. It's a lot like High Tension if you saw that and liked it you'll like this. It's better then High Tension I think.

It's called predictability, and this movie is full of it. It doesn't go anywhere until approximately half way through the movie, when you already know what's going to happen. There is no suspense. "Wolf Creek" is another in a long line of "vacation gone wrong" movies that never change, which ruins the fun long before you even pop the movie in.

...and there's no way in hell the majority will agree this is better than "High Tension", because while "High Tension" may be psuedo-predictable, it's original, and totally unnerving.

I purchased it blind awhile ago from amazon uk, and sold right after I watched it. It had its moments, but I couldn't ever see myself watching it again. It was just ok horror for me. Nothing really stood out or impressed me at all. I know some others who love it or hate it though. It's too risky for a blind buy. I would rent it first.

I can say 100% rental, do NOT make the mistake I did of buying it. It was barely a horror movie and more of a road trip flick. Trust me on this one, Hostel is the one to buy!

Personally, I would never suggest that someone blind buy something because I cant guarantee them a refund if they hate a movie.

Is it worth a rental? Yes, without a doubt.

For me, as a blind buy it was well worth it.

The cinematography of this film is fantastic. The acting is excellent. The terror is quite palpable once it gets going. The director did a great job of introducing me to the charactors and racheting up the suspense and tension in an unsettling off kilter way.

I am pleased to add Wolf Creek (unrated) to my collection of recent horror movies such as:

Devils Rejects
Haute Tension

And the soon to be purchased Hostel and Hills Have Eyes. :)

It's solid acting and direction with a totally been-there, done-that plot. I can't recall a single scene where I felt suspense or 'horror' about what was going on. If you've never seen a horror movie before, it will probably freak you out, but it certainly doesn't bring anything new to the table.

agree, cept for the solid acting. every scene was a scene from another, better horror film of the past.
and it is nothing like "High Tension" except maybe the accents. HT was much more thrilling, much more gorier/meatier and didn't take long at all to get going.
WC was amatuerish at best and i was so not entertained in the least.

Watched it last night. Great rental, absolutely. But as a blind buy...? Hmm...

Excellent making of documentary as an extra.

I would say rent it and if you like it blind buy it. Alot of people like it and alot of people dont. I thought it was decent, ill pick it up eventually but im in no hurry to.

I can't believe so many "horror fans" disliked this so much! This must be the MTV generations/music video horror movie crowd...not that there's anything wrong with that either. This just isn't that kind of movie.

This was a blind buy for me, and I couldn't ask for more in a horror movie. No...it wasn't completely original as it borrows heavily from movies like Hills and TCM, but it definately stands on it's own, and right along side of them in my opinion. As for nothing happening for the first hour, I completely disagree. To me, the whole thing was a slow burn...they did a great job of building the tension, a sense of dread and impending doom like few movies I've seen recently. And quite frankly...the cinematography in this movie deserves an Oscar...and I'm completely serious.

If you are a true horror movie fan, do yourself a favor and at least rent this movie. Don't let some of these other opinions scare you away.

This is one of those horror movies where the characters act so stupid that they deserve what they get. It's horror by-the-numbers. And why do all of these movies have to start with the characters singing along in the car while en route to their inevitable doom?

I am not an Mtv generation anything, but this just isn’t any different than any of a number of recent horror movies. It was ok, but definitely not worth a blind buy. I’m glad I rented it first, which I'm doing more now that HD/BR is on the horizon. Its just like someone else said, the people are incredibly dumb and you don’t have any sympathy for them. Its not a bad horror movie, just isn’t something I think is worth purchasing.

I watched the DVD this weekend. Solid horror movie but not outstanding because there are some uneven bits both of its acts. I loved the slow build. When it got horrific, I thought it would be more tame but it actually had some genuine shocks and decent (not good or great, just average) sequences.

I didnt think it was quite good enough to warrant a repeat viewing anytime soon, but I think most horror fans will be more than pleased with it as a rental.

if you are region free, you might want to consider the R4 version as it has more extras. personally i would pick this up as a blind buy :)

Hostel was barely a horror film. I recommend Wolf Creek as blind buy if you can pick it up cheap enough.

Watched this over the weekend. Definitley a rental. Not much out of the ordinary here.

Actually watched it as a rental last night. It was alright, but I don't see myself watching it again. Not that violence alone makes horror movies interesting, but I thought this one was fairly tame overall considering what I've heard. I wouldn't recommend a blind buy unless it was pretty cheap.
