Check out the Korean anime <b>"Wonderful Days"</b> (I think it goes by Blue Sky for the US release). It got mixed reviews, but I really enjoyed it (and I'm not the biggest fan of anime). Good soundtrack too!

<b>Enemy Mine</b> is one of those early 80s films that tend to get lost when people talk about sci-fi. Enjoyable movie.

<b>Cherry 2000</b> Now this is not that great of a movie, but I couldn't stop watching it. Give it a shot, it might be your kind of thing. It's a cult thing like Repo Man, with some similarities to <b>Buckaroo Banzai</b> and Mad Max.

Good luck finding that movie, only available in Germany and Italy as far as I know but English speech. It's a bit long at 280 minutes.
"Until The End of the World (aka Bis ans Ende der Welt)"

A bit too "arty" for me.

Is Light Years on DVD yet?

I remember seeing it a long time ago, and it is a thought-provoking sci-fi film.

Unfortunately, no. I rented it a few years ago on VHS, and ever since then I've hoped that it would get a DVD release, but it hasn't yet.

if you're a fan of the japanese films sony/tristar seems to releasing just about everthing from the godzilla era of the 60's although most of these movies are kid friendly and low buget

Mostly just some seconds:

Repo Man
ExistenZ
Videodrome
The Fly (Cronenberg)
The Hunger
The Hills Have Eyes
Knightriders

And just about any John Carpenter film, including:
The Thing
Escape From New York
Big Trouble in Little China
Prince of Darkness
In the Mouth of Madness
Ghosts of Mars

Silent Running - Not really a FX driven movie, though the FX is fantastic, it is "slow paced" story driven movie. This was one of the first movies I saw as a kid in the theaters that had an emotional effect on me. The movie could be listed as a "Save the Environment" type film.

Director Trumbull is a bit of a special effects legend in the business. If you have been impressed by the effects in a movie then the chances are good that Trumbull had a hand in the affair. He did the effects for, amongst others, 2001, Blade Runner and some of the Star Wars movies. Yes, the effects in Silent Running are good but they don't overwhelm the pic.

NM.

Try Fox's short lived "Harsh Realm" series. Which can be found on DVD cheap.

I'll second "The Day the Earth Stood Still"
also try "This Island Earth" both are classic sci-fi
