In the Mood for Love
Do The Right Think
Battle of Algiers
F for Fake

are all great movies with excellent and abundant extras.

I have been looking to get f for fake for some time as I am also trying to get into more Welles. Just typed f for fake in the search bar on Playusa and the second result after that was "The Forbidden Dance Is Lambada ", just thought it was strange how the world works sometimes!

A few Criterion titles that I would recommend that has yet to be mentioned-

Rififi
Insomnia
Long Good Friday
Mona Lisa
8 1/2
The Killers(double feature)

You sort of make your wife sound ignorant there, man. The way you talk, it makes it seem like she'd prefer you to come home with Big Mama's House instead of say, Ikiru, just because she's probably heard of the former and not the latter.

Anyway, I'd say check out:

- Do the Right Thing
- Ikiru
- Devil & Daniel Webster
- Throne of Blood
- M
- Rushmore

I've seen most of those at BB at one point or another. I know you've got BB store credit, but I'd consider taking advantage of DDD's Criterion sale, since they're a lot cheaper than most of the ones at BB.

The Passion of Joan of Arc - Carl Th. Dreyer's Silent Masterpiece accompanied by Richard Einhorn's emotive score.

I just watched Red Beard tonight and it was an amazing film...

His career was not a waste - check out his other films, particularly Touch of Evil and Falstaff (Chimes at Midnight).

Actually, she'd be pissed off something royal if I came home with Big Mama's House, hah. You're assuming that because it has to be something she has heard of, it must be a total mainstream crap film, which is not the case. She often buys titles I have never heard of too. For a matter of a fact, most of the "crap" movies in our collection have been purchased by me because I have a soft spot for 80's and 90's schlock I remember from my childhood.

But yeah, it's just the $30 per title factor on a total 100% blind buy that makes it hard to justify when there are literally hundreds of movies we both know we like and want and haven't purchased for whatever reason. If they were in the $10-15 range per title, she wouldn't care either way, and as soon as I have a little bit of money to throw at DDD, I will probably decent ammount of Criterion titles, specifically M and Brazil.

i think by all intents and standards his career was a disappointment considering how he was touted after "Citizen Kane". 4 pics does not make a stellar career, especially when you are Orson Welles.

No one has mentioned what may be the best Criterion release of them all? Wow...

The Killers

2 different full length movies, 1 short version, some great supplements. And everything on both discs is great.

I mentioned it in post #28.:) It's one of my favorite DVDs, period.

4 Pics? Just about movie he directed is now acknoledged as a masterpeice. He was just ahead of his time and a pain in the ass to work with.

Othello
Touch of Evil
Kane
Ambersons

These alone puts him among the greats not to mention some of more mainstream excellent stuff like the Stranger and Lady from Shanghai or his weird but extremely interesting films Arkadin, the Trial.

yeah...the ones you mentioned weren't well recieved at the times. and now you are mentioning the obscure and very little seen. i am not saying the ones he did weren't good or great, but he should have been much much more than he was and yes, it was his own fault.

so "The Killers" is that good? i am thinking of getting them. what non-criterions are they likened to?

Twiggystar 01-27-06 02:09 PM

I have to tell you this... get all of Luis Buñuel’s surrealist gems, he's my favorite director of all-time!!

See all Criterion's here

And Criterion will release some more Buñuel this year hopefully....

I have The Virgin Spring on order as well. I have to vehemently recommend Le Trou, Wages of Fear, Rififi, The Bad Sleep Well, High And Low, and The Third Man.

Errr.... Looks like I missed that one.

You show very good taste in picking that one as one of your favorite DVDs. I'd rank it in my top 20 easily, and maybe in my top 10 DVDs.

(I wouldn't put the movie in my top 10 or 20, although I think both the '46 and '64 versions in the DVD set are VERY good, but the DVD set is outstanding - Criterion really did a great job on that set!)

I don't want to be excessively arguementive as I understand the point you are trying to make, but you are linking "not well received at the time" with a "wasted" career. For what it is worth The Stranger and Lady from Shanghai were "well received" and were money makers for the studios. Othello won the Palm D'or at Cannes. I'll concede that some of the films he made in Europe outside the studio system (The Trial, Mr Arkadin and Chimes) are "little seen" and aren't well known here. Kane and Ambersons were extremely influential to countless directors. He could have been much more. We all can be much more, but i don't see how you can say his career was wasted.
