A River Runs Through It: Deluxe Edition??

This came out on 11/22, but I have yet to see a single review comparing it to the original release. Does anyone have a link to a review and/or have compared it themselves.

At first glance it looks like they've just added a terrible cover and "an exclusive 32-page scrapbook packed with never-before-seen production photos" (yawn) It even seems to have *fewer* extras than the original release (which at least had the trailer).

But the back also says it has "been fully re-mastered for the best picture ever". I can't tell if that is marketingspeak, or if this is actually a new transfer.

Any clue?

In an effort to help you the best way I can, all of Columbia's recent repackagings (notably SCHOOL DAZE: Special Edition, STAND BY ME: Deluxe Edition and BIG FISH: 2005 Reissue With Collectible Book) feature the IDENTICAL discs found in the earlier DVD pressings, even down to the extras; in other words, the only thing whatsoever that will likely be different about it from the one you sound like you already have is the added scrapbook.

Thanks -- that's definitely what I'm suspecting. I didn't know about the others, but I thought of Big Fish right away. I'd love confirmation one way or the other about the transfer... but I'm 95% sure you're right that it's probably just a repack.

Double-dips are getting more and more confusing lately. In the past they were frustrating, but at least they were (usually) worth it. :)

Yeah, Columbia's really yanking my scrote hairs with these paltry reissues; I'm the kind of dumb-ass that has to have EVERYTHING, the biggest, baddest version, but what Columbia's doing is really killing me--so much investment on my end for so little payoff...I know, I know, I have only myself to blame...

I am interested in some reviews of this and the re-release of Legends of the Fall. I would like to know if the video is really improved.

Betcha a million-to-one it ain't.

A River Runs Through It: Deluxe Edition Review:

The Video: How Does The Disc Look?

It sure looks like this River Runs Through It Deluxe Edition has the same transfer as the original DVD release.

Final Thoughts

I’m soon going to start lobbying for a Robert Redford DVD Collection – hopefully it’s in the pipeline – because this River Runs Through It Deluxe Edition is pathetic. Unless you’re susceptible to swoon upon seeing photos of Brad Pitt, I wouldn’t upgrade to this one from your original DVD of the film. The transfer and mix look and sound the same as they did the first time around, and the lack of bonus features really underwhelm. It may carry an SRP of only twenty bucks, but you really don’t get much bang for your buck here. What a drag.

Well the orginal was a non-anamorphic transfer right? So, even though it appears this one isn't the greatest at least it's anamorphic....right? Still, it's dissapointing.

No, the original was anamorphic. Seems like the same disc/transfer.

You're kidding! Great, I traded in for a worse cover.... I'll have to watch Sony's (or anyone's) double dips more closely.
