DVD Talk review of 'Gantz Vol 9:Judge, Jury & Executioner'
I read John Sinnott's DVD review of Gantz Vol 9:Judge, Jury & Executioner at http://www.dvdtalk.com/reviews/read.php?ID=18600 and...
At the end of it he mentions ADV screwing the fans with the Gantz releases not having any good extras on them and I agree with him about that. The show is very good, but you're spending $30 on basicilly a bare bones disc. What I think might happen is a few months after the last disc is released ADV is going to re-release the series in some kind of box set whith a bunch of extras.

Nice thought but wrong. ADV is releasing the series as 2 thinpack boxsets each containing all the extras on the current discs(because each set has the same discs as the current releases).
After that, ADV may release a full release thinpack set. Maybe. But if they do it'll be without any of the extras on the current discs. Yes, there are extras on the Gantz dvds. They aren't many, but they are there. Anime isn't exactly known for an abundance of extras.

The trend in anime is to either release the same discs in a box set (without the paper inserts) or to release the episodes without the extras in a thinpack set. Considering how weak most of the extras are, they don't typically add much value but I'd like to see the recent surge in boxed sets offering up more value-added content than they have (though the price drops have been appreciated). Unlike more mainstream titles, it is quite uncommon to get better extras on re-releases in anime although a few examples exist.

That's because anime companies get the majority of their money from single-volume purchases. Adding extras to those releases is their way of thanking the customers. Taking them off for the cheaper thinpacks is their way of showing it's worthwhile to buy the single volumes.

While I would have enjoyed more bonus material, the real reason I'm disappointed with the way ADV has been releasing Gantz is the low episode count. They started with 2 episodes/disc with a MSRP of $18 or $9/episode. That was pretty high and it was going to take a long time to obtain all of the shows. For a single DVD, Volume 7, they increased the episode count to 4, and raised the price to $30. ($7.50/episode.)
It seemed that they were actually listening to the fans who disliked the earlier releases! I happily praised ADV in my review of that volume. Then, in an apparent slap in the face, they decreased the episode count to three, but kept the price the same. ($10/episode)
Basically, I don't like the fact that they have increased the price half way through the release. It's not fair to the fans who've supported the series so far.
