DVD Reviewers: Favorite Opening Lines
Continuing the series of recent threads, but this one is open to reviewers from DVDTalk or other sites.
What is the favorite opening line you've ever written for a review? What line did you feel most clever for writing, or do you think best introduced and/or summed up the movie? I have a couple. From Casino Royale: "Long before Austin Powers spoofed James Bond, James Bond spoofed James Bond in Casino Royale." I don't know, maybe I'm the only one who thought that was funny, but I enjoyed writing it. From The Son's Room: "I suppose they need TV movies of the week even in Italy, but why should such things be released theatrically here?" That one, I think, perfectly encapsulates the whole movie. So, let's hear what yours are. |
Now that I think of it, my opening lines are usually pretty straightforward...I usually save the funny/clever stuff for the "closing statement". Do they count? :)

For the most part, my opening lines are rather weak, but I enjoyed this one from my review of the bthere disc:
"After spending half an evening watching the bthere DVD, I've decided to devote the rest of my life to creating a time machine. I don't care how much money I must spend, or how difficult the task proves to be, I will do whatever it takes to get my two hours back." |

From my most self-overhyped review ever:
"I don't think you have really lived until you've watched the Bee Gees engage in a disco kung-fu battle against poorly choreographed nurses while Steve Martin, gyrating in the corner and performing a rather freakish Peter Lorre impression, dodges blows from a silver cane swung by Peter Frampton. From my review of 24: Season Two:
The following review takes place between the top of this page and the bottom. The reading happens in real time. There are those who believe DVD reviews here began out there…far across the Internet with tribes of reviewers who may have been the forefathers of the Beierles, or the Ordways, or the Bovbergs. That they may have been the architects of The Aisle View, or the lost civilizations of Cinema Gotham and CineSchlock-O-Rama. Some believe that there may yet be reviewers of DVDs who even now fight to sit through hours of episodic television on disc…far, far away in cyberspace. |
