DVD Talk review of 'The Tin Drum - Criterion Collection'
I read Randy Miller III's DVD review of The Tin Drum - Criterion Collection at http://www.dvdtalk.com/reviews/read.php?ID=10699 and I was wondering how this stacks up to the Kino release of the DVD.

I've never seen the out-of-print Kino DVD firsthand, but DVD Beaver has a comparsion between that version and a few others (not the Criterion, though). Still, it looks to be no contest, as the Kino screen captures look quite worn and blurry. Additionally, the Kino transfer (1.61:1) is slightly cropped, and the English subtitles are burned in. My best guess is that the Criterion transfer is at---or above---the level of the Kinowelt Region 2 DVD (which the Kino <i>is</i> compared to).
Additionally, Criterion features both 5.1 and 1.0 audio mixes, and a whole second disc of extras. In my opinion, it's a much more well-rounded release. |
