DVD Talk review of 'Gilmore Girls - The Complete First Season'

I can't stand this show... but after reading this review, I feel like buying it...

When you say you can't stand this show, jrobinson, you make me strongly suspect you've never seen it's first season. Because, while Season Three was hit or miss, and the early portions of the current season only slightly better, Season One was every bit as good as Mr. Tyner's review makes it sound, if not even better. Take it from someone who's followed the show from the beginning.

I would say this is a show that, regardless of minor variances from one season to another, is a love it/hate it proposition. If you aren't into the basic premise, which is two girls who talk and talk and talk and talk and talk and talk and talk and then talk some more until there are no combinations of words left in the English language for them to say (a point we haven't hit yet), you're not going to care whether Season 1 has a better storyline than Season 2 or whatever.

In my opinion, this is one of the smartest written shows on television and the acting is great, both comedic and dramatic. I highly recommend it.

No I don't follow the show. I've only caught a few reruns... and yes, the idea of two girls chatting does not appeal to me... but still, I feel compelled to give it another chance. Probably not a good idea to buy it, so I just bumped the first disc to the top of my netflix queue. If the first disc goes well, I'll probably pick it up.

Just let us know how many episodes it took to get you hooked, jrobinson. :-)

I personally was gonzo before the first half of the Pilot was over, and no other show *ever* got to me that quickly.

And with all due respect to Josh Z, this show is about the unusual relationship between the mother and the daughter, not about the talk per se, even though they *do* talk a lot.

It's not about talk, but about communication, grokking, understanding. Slight difference, but an important distinction.

Well, for those who were following this thread... I watched the first disc over the weekend... and I must say, I really enjoyed it. I'm assuming that just catching an episode (or maybe even part) here and there, didn't really give me a true insight to what the show was about. Thus, I didn't have the chance to appeal to the characters or what was going on. Anyways, as I said, I really liked it. Now I just have to wait for netflix to deliver the rest of them... and it gets added into my large queue of to-buy-dvds.

Oh god, this means I might actually like Dawson's Creek, Roswell, Smallville, or any number of those trendy WB television series :eek:

I totally agree with Brak55.

Just wait till you get to the episodes Kiss and Tell, Rory's Dance, and Forgiveness and Stuff, jrobinson. Those are all even better than what you've seen so far.

Rory's Birthday Parties, Concert Interruptus and That Damn Donna Reed arguably could also be included on the above list.
