How is "Big Fish"?...a good blind buy?

Anyone have this yet and can recommend it? How is it as a movie and a DVD? I didn't get a chance to see it, but wanted too, but was kinda iffy. Read the reviews, but was wondering others opinions. Keep in mind I do like Burton's stuff, like "Sleepy Hollow", "Nightmare Before...", etc..., though I do know this is a departure.

Thanks for any help.

I caution a rental first before a blind buy.

asianxcore 04-27-04 03:44 PM

I personally thought it was a great movie. Definately a departure for Burton, but I agree with the poster above, this one I'd recommend renting before buying. Just because the amount of interest in this movie will vary greatly from person to person.

I also thought this was a great movie with lots of imagination. Go buy it.

chente 04-27-04 05:56 PM

Buy it. I loved it. It is a bit sappy, though.

fumanstan 04-27-04 06:02 PM

Blind bought it today and absolutely loved it.

Seeker 04-27-04 06:24 PM

ok - sounds like netflix first, then if i love it, buy it.

milo bloom 04-27-04 07:20 PM

I don't know if I can recommend it or not, but I loved it. I love tall tales, and I love Burton's style, and I loved the story.

But I don't think it'd be for everyone.

Got me a littley misty eyed though...

I can't explain it. This movie made me flat out cry. I really thought I was a manly man, and for some reason this movie really got to me at the end. Although, I did enjoy it all the way through, I would advocate a rental before buying.

If it makes you feel better, it made me start to tear up too.

I was wondering myself if this was a good blind buy. I love Burton's flicks, including the Planet of the Apes one. Maybe I will rent it to be safe.

I actually would call this one of the 5 best that I saw in the theatre last year. Now it may not be for everyone as you can do a search at Google and find those that hate it (guess it was not gothic enough for those Burton fans). You probably want to rent it first just incase.

Josh H 04-29-04 12:43 PM

I like it a lot, but I wouldn't reccommend a blind buy here.

Opinions are too mixed among people I know who saw it, some loved it, some hated it, some thought it was merely ok.

filmerp 04-29-04 10:22 PM

Saw this one in the theater with lots of reservations, based on my dislike for Burton's previous 3 movies. To my pleasant surprise, I liked Big Fish more than ANY movie he's done before. Fantastic film, structurally, visually and story-wise. I spent the rest of its theater run encouraging people to see it right away. I feel confident telling you to do the same.

RyoHazuki 04-30-04 12:08 AM

I'd say rent it. Like Josh said, too many mixed opinions to make this a solid blind buy.

Ok, really really off topic (but I didn't want to start a new thread). In Big Fish at around the 4 minute 20 second mark, when the father and son are arguing outside, I'm hearing a lot of static in the voices (especially when the father says "C'mon, everyone loves that story" and the son gives his reply about how he doesn't). This is just me being anal about audio, but I'm just wondering if anyone has cranked up the sound at that part and heard the same thing. I've tried it in three different systems and heard the static in the voices. It always bugs me when I hear imperfections in soundtracks because I first have to assume that it's my system messing up.

BTW, loved Big Fish. :)

This looks interesting, bit a little too weird for me to Blind Buy. I usually like Tim Burton's stuff, but I will have to rent this. This looks a little like that Cuba Gooding jr movie with Robin Williams.

Shannon Nutt 05-01-04 04:10 PM

I bought it today as a Blind Buy and LOVED it...one of the best movies I have seen in a while. I don't know if anyone's made the comparison yet, but it has a very "Forrest Gump" feel and structure to it...so I would say if you like that type of film, to go ahead and pick it up.

OldBoy 05-01-04 06:52 PM

Well, I got to say..I rented like many suggested. Stopped it at about 20 minutes in and went to BUY IT!! I knew right away I would love this movie and very much want the DVD thereafter. I have yet to finish the movie as now I have the gift of time so I can wait and gonna take the rental back unfinished. I just knew with this one and I won't look back. Never before and prob. never again will this happen. Thanks to all for their suggestions and comments!

this movie made me ball like a baby. i couldnt even leave the theater until the lights came on. the funniest thing is that my wife said there were about 6 other couples left at the end and the men were the ones crying...

...it was a great movie i thought. i can see how someone may not like it but it hit home for me.

I assume you mean What Dreams May Come, unless Robin Williams had a cameo in Boat Trip or something.

The two movies really don't seem very much alike at all. Big Fish is more akin to The Adventures of Baron Munchausen.

yes

roger_d 05-12-04 06:31 AM

I bought it but now i wish i had rented it.

cdollaz 05-12-04 11:43 AM

It was OK for a one-time deal, but I was kinda bored (it was slow to me) and couldn't sit thru it again.

Fok 05-14-04 01:57 AM

I bought it as a blind buy. No regrets, but its one of those movies where you'd watch 1-2 times a year.
