DVD Talk review of 'Jeremiah: Season 1'

I read John Sinnott's DVD review of Jeremiah: Season 1 at http://www.dvdtalk.com/reviews/read.php?ID=8937 and...

He says the video is 1.33:1 "as originally intended" - but I clearly recall watching it as aired (friday nights right after the amazing, and cancelled, Odyssey 5) in hidef widescreen. I just checked now and season 2 is definitely 16x9.

I'm not familar with this show at all... but perhaps it is simliar to the X-Files as it was originally filmed for 1.33:1, but starting with season 5 it was widescreen.

I'm pretty sure Season 1 was not aired in HD, but as an upconvert. Odyssey 5, however, was true HD the whole time. Sadly, I think 1.33:1 is correct here. This season (whenever they air a freakin' episode) is 16x9.

Funny you should mention that Jah-Wren, I did look for the OAR for this show. I couldn't find any that mentioned it being shown in WS, even Showtime's site. The DVD case simply states "standard" and doesn't indicate that it was altered. I did find a referance to the DVD being presented in OAR (from where, I can't recall) and with lack of evidance to the contrary went with that. I was expecting it to be 16:9 since B5 was, but I know that JMS had a lot of trouble with MGM. I assumed that the aspect ratio was a battle he lost. I'll remove the "originally intended" comment since there's some doubt.

Thanks for pointing that out!

This usenet posting, and the subsequent thread, confirm that it was originally in widescreen and that it was also in 5.1 dolby digital.

FWIW, turns out I was wrong on a minor detail -- I wasn't watching it hi-def, just letterboxed, I wasn't able to receive showtime in hi-def back then.

I always watched this show on the Showtime-HD channel and it was always widescreen and an HD broadcast, not just an upconvert. Strange that they'd put it out in 1.33:1

Another voice that saw it in widescreen. I emailed JMS right after this was announced about it and he said he had no input on this release. MGM strikes again...

Hopefully it will reair on HD Net (as will Odyssey 5) and I can get proper DVD-R's.
