BAND OF BROTHERS. Is it worth the price?

I have heard nothing but praise for this set, but the high $90 price tag has kept me away, even the $70 price tag at Costco seems a bit steep.

I loved Saving Private Ryan.

What I am asking is, is Band of Brothers really that great?

I don't know...I've been watching it (currently on the fourth episode), but I'm a little disappointed so far (and I only paid $36 for it at a used DVD store). I want to like it, but I just can't really get into it like I thought I would. Still, maybe it'll pick up in a few episodes...I guess I shouldn't really judge a mini-series until I've seen it in its entirety.

It is a bit pricey, but if you liked SPR, Im sure you will LOVE BoB. Ive seen it twice through renting it from the Library, and was facinated both times. I also just bought it for my Dad for Christmas and cant wait to spend the next couple weeks going over and watching it with him. But again, even with the amazing packaging and informative extras, this can be an expensive set for the average DVD fan such as myself. But as soon as I see it used I am, without hesitation, going to pick up a copy for myself.

It is far and above Saving Private Ryan. It's the best mini-series ever created for television in my humble opinion.

If you do a search you'll find at least two threads around here asking the same question, and the answer is almost universally the same: Yes, it's worth every penny.

If all of my DVDs were stolen tomorrow, the very first thing I would replace is "Band of Brothers."

The best price I've seen is $64 at Wal-Mart.

I second that so hard it's squirting out my ears.

(Dunno what that means, but it's the day after xmas, and I'm at work - I refuse to make sense.)

It's a bargain at twice the price.

One could argue that it's only the second best mini-series in the history of television, next to From the Earth to the Moon. And that's about the worst thing I can say about it. Like others have said, it's also significantly better than Saving Private Ryan.

Its not worth it... I'd doubt its historical accuracy as much as I'd doubt Schindler's List..

Good for you for going against the grain and telling the popular opinion to go fsck itself.

Just got the series from netflix, gonna check it out this week.

BTW, thread starter, if you're still in doubt about getting the series, it does come in a nice collectible tin can... if you're into those things... tin cans.

Eh? I don't get it...am I supposed to like Band of Brothers now (based on popular opinion), or should I think for myself on this matter? I just can't decide!

By the way...regardless of the outcome, Shenmue rocks the house.

Yes, by all means, it is worth every penny. It is the best filmed depiction of WWII in any medium (theatrical films, miniseries, tv, etc.). Because of its nearly 10-hour length, it allows for a great deal of character and story development.

Alright, if it's not worth it to you, that's fine, but it's historical accuracy is nearly dead-on. It is taken from Stephen Ambrose's book of the same name and he worked as a coordinator on the miniseries, and he is well-respected as one of the most knowledgable and accurate historians of our time. Not only that, but the miniseries was made with the full help of the surviving members of Easy Company. That said, Band of Brothers is as close to accurate as you're ever going to see.

Now on the other hand, while Schindler's List is based a great deal in truth and much of it is historically accurate, there were also many liberties taken with the script (the original book, Schindler's List, from which the movie is taken, is more of a collection of various stories of many of the Jewish families that Schindler helped rather than strictly about Schindler himself). Although there are a number of inaccuracies in the film, as with most every movie based on historical events, it is still a wonderful film that succeeds in its aims to portray much of the emotion and many of the facts of the Holocaust.
