Is "Snuff" up to snuff?

I remember when this movie originally came out, it caused quite a stir. I remember reading stories about if it was real or not. At the time, I was too young to try to see the movie myself.

Now the DVD is being released tomorrow. Has anyone seen it? Any thoughts?

Reportedly Blue Underground didn't get the discs back far enough in advance to distribute screeners. There's a thread about this on the Mobius Home Video Forum.

There was supposedly a review at DVD Planet that went something like:

According to the review : "...here you get a movie with no box art, no menu screens and no credits. The disc goes in and the movie goes on and that?s all there is to it. As for the specs: the movie is full frame and the audio is mono. There are no features on the disc." It sounds great and cleverly marketed (or non-marketed) and designed.
but a search of Snuff on DVD Planet didn't turn it up.

Interesting.... thanks for the info!

This is one of the worst films I have ever seen. 90% of the film has nothing to do with the so-called "snuff" sequence which seems to be tacked on at the very end....and it is obviously fake.

Well, that's exactly what happened. :D Snuff was an attempt at taking a terrible movie and trying to build some mystique around it so that someone might actually have some remote interest in seeing it. It's a movie where I think most of the interest revolves around its reputation more than the "merits" of the film itself.

Thanks for the replies. All this now rings a familiar bell in the catacombs of my memory. I was thinking of picking this up (even just for the "notoriety" aspect) but I'm having second thoughts now.

...ahh... yes... Snuff... ahh... yes...

. . . :o . . .

Thanks for the link. A very nice read into the history of the "notorious" film. No wonder the producers of Blair Witch Project were grinning right before release day :)

I picked it up, hoping there'd be some interesting back-story on the film (I'd seen it in college years ago). Alas, no extras, no nothing. I don't feel too ripped off, because I'm collecting all the Blue Underground stuff. I get the marketing joke of releasing it this way, but it would have been nice to see some extras on it.

So unless you like having all the BU releases, or actually LOVE this movie (not sure how that's possible), I'd suggest renting it (not sure how that's possible, either!).

Oh - also, it's a bit steep. I got it for $19.99 at BB. That's a lot for a bare-bones disc, IMO.
