Slashers ($la$her$)
i rented this dtv B horror movie from hollywood video. it's distributed by fangoria. the box got my attention but i passed on it thinking like most dtv horror movies, it would suck. i finally broke down and checked it out the other night. for a B movie, it is as bad as you would expect it to be, however there are a few elements that make it worth checking out. plus it has awesome extras.
the plot is much like series 7. a japanese gameshow has contestants enter arenas and face 3 trained killers. no rules. survivors win a few million, plus an added 3 million for killing a slasher. the movie starts with the show starting offering it's first showing of american contestants. 6 people, 3 men and 3 women. none can act. if they could or the script was better the movie might of been a lot cooler. as it is now, they're acting is cheesy and laughable. that's kind of a good point, the laughing. the real fun of the movie is the 3 killers, each with their own costume and gimmick/personality. there is dr ripper, chainsaw charlie and the preacher man. the last two are the same actor. these guys are fun and make the movie worth watching. there are some other interesting things, such is that there is only one camera man, it would be pointless for you to die if the tv audience can't see it. so knowing you are being filmed means you might be attacked at any second. the contestants and the killers have to wear a neckcollar that sends them shocks if they disobey anything, mainly during commercials everyone must stop what they are doing and stay in place, even if it is in mid fight. here is a decent review of it: http://www.joblo.com/arrow/slashers.htm defintely not a movie for everyone the cheese and bad production values will annoy most. but if you are used to renting dtv horror movies from full moon and whoever, check this out since it is one of the better ones. edit: forgot the extras. there is a making of that runs 50 some mintues and is very cool. they talk with the dircetor and camera man, the actors, show behind the scenes stuff and even the premier at a film festival in canada. lots of interesting stuff about making a B movie. including a few mentions of being hasseled for it being a non union production. the entire soundtrack can be listened too. while nothing awesome some of the themes are rather catchy. definitely a cool feature. the menu system for it is alittle poor though. commentary, didn't get a chance to listen too it. deleted and extened scenes over all the extras are kick ass and worth the rent. |
Based on a recent review at ZombieKeeper, I just rented $la$her$ last night and thoroughly enjoyed it. No, it's not going to win any major awards, but it's pretty cool for what it is.
From what I've read (including your review here, Venom), people either hate this movie or like it for the straight-to-video B-movie that it is. It's very clever and well done for the budget. I'm glad I rented it. And the DVD is an awesome package with a plethora of special features. I'll definitely be buying this one. |
