So it did end up with the commentary, but not the DTS track? Still, better than I thought.

Geofferson 06-18-02 10:50 AM

Awesome! I can't wait to watch this DVD!

Grizzly 06-18-02 03:15 PM

Amélie HAS the director's commentary! yay! no DTS though.

weird that The Royal Tenenbaums had picture quality problems.. that really sucks, especially since it's a brand spanking new film and because it's Criterion releasing it. i can't believe they'd release a sub-par transfer for it.. then again, the review could be exaggerated but they only gave it 3 stars of 5 possible.

bluntman86 06-20-02 01:07 PM

I thought it wasn't possible for me to love The Royal Tenenbaums any more than I do now.I was wrong.I can't wait for this DVD.

The DTS track is on there, but apparently wasn't reviewed.

yes, very good news indeed! (especially since my DVD shipped today!)

didn't make sense at all that Criterion would release a disc with a faulty image like that, especially when it's a brand new film.. so i'm glad DVDfile set the record straight. maybe the DVD the other site reviewed was scratched, damaged or something?

Ju|ian 06-25-02 04:23 PM

is that what the cover looks like? the one on the criterion site is a lot nicer..

Grizzly 06-25-02 04:56 PM

Ju|ian, it's both.

the poster family photo is a slipcover, and the handdrawn one is the regular keepcase cover.

that's clever. palliate the masses with an aesthetically-challenged cover cramming in every superstar cast member.. but retain some integrity with a much more suitable keepcase cover. i'm probably going to throw out the slipcover...

Grizzly 06-26-02 05:21 PM

Ju|ian, i'm sure Buena Vista demanded it since it'll be the only release available (at the moment, anyway) of the film on DVD.

chsidwel 06-27-02 10:22 AM

I'll probably be tossing the slip cover as well. My copy also shipped this week. I was shocked. It's coming from Canada, but I sure hope it arrives by the weekend...

Grizzly 06-27-02 05:16 PM

got mine today. fabulous release.. just terrific.

just ignore that first review.. he must've gotten a faulty disc or something. it looks great.

HEM 06-28-02 11:20 AM

You are so lucky grizzly,I was just wondering what are the deleted scenes?

The Antipodean 07-09-02 10:54 PM

Bump, now that it's out

MrVette99 07-10-02 04:00 PM

I watch it last night and was a little dissappointed. I liked it, but not a whole lot. The story was interesting, but it's a little to dark for my taste, and not as funny as I expected it to be.

Great picture quality, but what a waste of DTS. Beside there being a little background music, this is all front channel stuff.

bralph 07-11-02 07:46 AM

MvVette99, I gotta say I agree with you. I couldn't figure out what was supposed to be funny either. The very end is the only time I even chuckled. I suppose I should have expected to not care for this movie, as I didn't much like Rushmore either.

entitee 07-12-02 11:52 AM

sheesh... the slipcover isn't that bad, guys! It's not like some cliche photoshop collage. It's the Royal Tenenbaums family photo.

DVD Smurf 07-13-02 10:19 PM

This is what I think. Grade: 9/10

Royal Tenenbaums is an erratic, yet smooth, cinematic experience. The erratic presence of the selfish Royal in the upbringing of the three children Chas, Margot, and Richie, leaves an element of worry within the later grown up children. Royal is searching for a way of paying his dues in order to fix his predicaments with his past. The films erratic element, i.e., editing and staging, lends support to the films theme and goal. In the end the whole films sums up with an exposed smoothness that leaves the audience contemplating.
