Eureka... give me some great news...

This Japanese film ( Eureka ) sounds too amazing! I have a review of the R2 film/DVD on my website:
CLICK HERE TO VIEW and am considering purchasing a Region free player just to see it... Can anyone tell me some great news that they know of this coming to R1 ? ( or R0 ? )

NOTE: the pictures in the review are from the publicity stills.

It sounds like it has elements of Egoyan's Sweet Hereafter and Weir's Fearless ( another fav )...

I think if done right, it could be an amazing DVD... sepia tones and a 2.35:1 screen ratio...

Help... tell me you have heard something !!

Cheers,

As a resident CriterionDVD forum member, you should know this already :)

There most probably will not be an R1 or R0 version. The film's US distributor, "Shooting Gallery" shut down last year amid bankruptcy. AFAIK, no one has bought the rights to the film in the US, and it now sits in limbo.

There most likely won't be an R0 because R0 versions usually come from Hong Kong or South Korea - and the film was not released in either places. After all, a 3.5 hour B&W film with little dialogue isn't about to be very commercial.
The film is, of course, one of the masterpiece of the 2000's. It is one of the few films to get a perfect score from me (along with In the Mood for Love).

I have this title coming from cdjapan, can't wait. :)

Gary, I can make a copy for you if you send me a blank tape. I know it's not a DVD, but at least you get to see it.

...ah oui... très intéressant - peut-être... et (malheureusement?) très peu probable d'apparaître sur DVD R1, ni même sur DVD R2/Europe...

...WOW! (or: OOPS!)... it appears I spoke too soon: the UK label Artificial Eye will release a DVD later this month:

"...Next up is Japanese director Shinji Aoyama’s Eureka. When a bus is violently hi-jacked in a small Japanese town, only three people survive: the guilt-wracked driver Makoto (Koji Yakusho [The Eel, Shall We Dance]), and a young brother and sister, Kozue and Noaki. Two years on, each of them, still traumatised by their ordeal, struggle to re-engage with life. But then one day Makoto impulsively buys a bus and sets off with Kozue and Naoki on a long journey across Japan, which becomes a cathartic odyssey of spiritual self-discovery.
Released on 22nd April, the three and a half hour long film is presented in a letterbox transfer with a Dolby Digital 2.0 soundtrack and comes with a retail price of £19.99.
..."

...just thought you'd like to know...

Are the extras on the Japanese DVD subtitled? I'll probably pick that one up anyway over the UK release since the latter is non-anamorphic.

Man, I was really hoping this thread was an announcement that Eureka was coming out on dvd in Region 1. I still hold out hope....stranger things and luckier things have happened for Region 1 dvd. I would also like to see last year's Shooting Gallery film The Day I Became A Woman come out on region 1 dvd.
