*bump*

This release slipped under my radar and me wants! I guess it just came out. Does anyone have it yet? How is it? The DVD I mean, not the movie. It's it Full Frame or Widescreen? How is the video quality? Extras??

Bueller...... bueller......

It's full-frame. The image is dark. The print used for the transfer has some minor scratches. The audio is 5.1, but the rear channels are far too loud. The DVD contains the trailer and a slew of bonus trailers. No chapter menu.

Thanks! I guess I'll wait it out for another one.

It definitely gives new meaning to "bare-bones release." The image is indeed craptacular, but since it's the first time I've seen the movie on any media, I don't know if that's just from the only source print being available having spent ten years in a locked filing cabinet in a flooded basement bathroom with a sign on the door saying "beware of the hippo"...or the disc producers simply not caring.

That the entire film's in a single chapter, and based on the, er, quality of the bonus trailers (hoooo boy), does give some weight to the "just didn't care" theory.

But on the plus side, it's absurdly cheap, and the movie itself is one of the most incredibly demented things I've ever seen. God bless you Peter Jackson, you magnificent mutant.

I picked up the canadian release, image is surprisingly good (compared to VHS) sound is nice DD as well and it has scene selections to boot I don't know how great the quality of the original footage was to start with- so no complaints here.

Am I wrong in thinking that 1.33:1 is the intended aspect ratio? I don't see signs of P&S

Jackson's creativity is certainly displayed here but in a more comedically demented sense, I love it!

Now where is a nice widescreen release of Heavenly Creatures?

garmonbozia 04-12-02 06:49 PM

can anyone compare the Canadian release with the new US release??

DVD Smurf 04-12-02 08:13 PM

Original Aspect Ratio is:

1.85 : 1

I will delete this from my order now, thanks!

The Original Aspect Ratio is actually 1.66:1, which is near full screen.

I got my info from imdb... 1.66 is still not full screen.

1.33:1

Significant difference to me. :)

Just watched this myself - the image quality is *truly* terrible, lots of scratches, dark scenes, etc., but since I haven't seen the movie before and it is one of PJ's cheapie earlier movies, it's hard for me to know how awful the original print was. It's a truly twisted, funny movie although for me both BAD TASTE and BRAIN-DEAD/DEAD ALIVE are better of his early stuff; but if you're compulsive about getting the "best" this might be a rental and wait and see if a better package comes along. This is about as bare-bones as it gets.

One has to wonder if this film will ever get a proper release. The canadian version sounds to be just a little better at this point if nothing else for the chapter stops, but it sounds like it might be a better transfer also.

Try aligning those images along a common center. The 1.66:1 will only have small slivers of extra picture on each side, as opposed to the way it looks now where it seems to have a lot more picture all on one side.

Besides, the movie was almost certainly shot open-matte, making that comparison irrelevant, and the difference between ratios less significant.
