For some strange reason, they didn't give very much early information on this title. It IS in 5.1 but the only other extras are Lyrics (which may turn out to be hysterical as on the Girlie show disc) and a photo gallery. I'm just hoping they didn't screw it up as badly as they did the Girlie Show DVD. I know that it was re-edited visually to include better shots and whatknot and someone was complaining that during "sky fits heaven" they cut away EVERY TIME she hits someone. Dunno why.

This would have been a GREAT time for some extras...and Warners dropped the ball on this AGAIN.

They don't really "cut away"; instead, they show little graphics that look like the cartoon "WHAP" or "POW" images from the old "Batman" TV show, except they use Japanese characters. It's pretty obnoxious.

Although I saw Maddy six times on this tour, I hadn't watched the HBO special until I got the DVD today. What was the point? I knew I'd get the DVD eventually.

Good performance, fairly poor editing and assembling - it doesn't represent the show to the best of its ability. Too many quick cuts and silly effects.

Terrific audio for the most part. Bass was erratic but usually quite strong, and the 5.1 mixes - it includes DD 5.1 and DTS 5.1 (!) - really filled the room nicely.

However...

The picture quality was genuinely BAD. The image seemed very soft most of the time. This wasn't a case of soft focus to make Maddy look younger; the damned thing was downright BLURRY on many occasions. Some shots looked quite good, but most were awfully fuzzy.

My full review will go online in a couple of days, and I'll link it then. It's still a must-have for Maddy fans, but I'm very disappointed with the weak picture. Well, at least it sounds good...

Wow, thanks for the update. That anwsers the question I posed about the sound in the DVD Music thread. I'm STUNNED that there is DTS on the disc; there's not a logo on the package.
I did notice on the back an "R" rating by the MPAA. How stupid is that? Not only is there nothing in the show to warrent that rating, but how did it get rated in the first place? When was it shown theatrically?

Dunno WHY it got rated, but it DEFINITELY earned an "R":

Spoiler:
"F**k off, motherf**kers!"

Spoiler:
Pornographic anime, anyone?

Well, this was shot on video. Not only that, but it was broadcast LIVE on HBO. Considering how dark the production was, it's pretty hard to pull off perfect focus all the time in those conditions. I thought the image quality was fine with that caveat--and I watched it on a front projection TV at 85 inches across!

The DTS mix is FANTASTIC, and it is the best reason to buy the set.

It wasn't a question of "perfect focus" - I thought the thing looked God-awful blurry much of the time. I've seen many 4X3 concerts on DVD, and none have been quite this bad except for perhaps Janet Jackson's Velvet Rope; that program honestly looked worse than the VHS tape I made from HBO. Unfortunately, I don't have a tape of the Maddy broadcast, but I didn't see this as an issue of inconsistent focus; it was just badly fuzzy and soft much of the time...

I don't believe that the "Batman"esque effects during the fight sequence where on the original broadcast. I have the tape so I'll have to double check. The broadcast also looked fairly good in my opinion, the DVD probably just has a poor transfer due to the video tape source.

Highly recommended! DTS sound and a better edit than the television broadcast - you can't do wrong.

re-edits

I just got the DVD today.

I was blown away by the excellent DTS surround mix. Check out the "Sky in Heaven" (aka Crouching Tiger sequence).. The sound effects went from one speaker to another.

And yes, the video portion is completely different from the HBO's version. I had it sync'ed up with my Tivo and liked being able to watch different camera angles.

By the way, Warner did the same to Madonna's "Girlie Show" DVD.

More differences!

I've watched the DVD completely this weekend and noticed more differences:

On the "What it feels like a girl...." remix, you do not see any of the dancers on instead, instead, you see the entire Japanese cartoon.

During "Music", the Stardust audio sample is missing!!

i never was lucky enuff to see the show in person or on HBO. But the dvd is terrific. i do wish they left out the nude anime chicks though as i can't let the niece watch it how it currently is. i have to be there to skip over that bit.

Hello,

Well, coming from a HUGE Madonna fan I must say I saw the concert live and just picked up the dvd, the picture quality is absolutely beautiful the colors are so vibrant. The sound is in 5.1 digital and is has to be heard to be believed it's incredible! I actually got chills when I heard the sound. I honestly couldn't believe how clear and natural it was.

Unfortunately, they decided to add a few special effects most noticabley during the song sky fits heaven. I thought they were unnecessary, and didn't fit well. Other than that there were a few effects at the beginning that didn't bother me much.

There are not much extra's, you get a Madonna photo gallery. And the option to play the lyrics captioned. Which at times are wrong! And the option to jump to any song in the concert. Not really all that exciting. There are a few Madonna images on the inside cover that are really nice. Unfortunately, that's all you get. Hope this helps.
