Review Wanted: When a Stranger Calls
How's the DVD ?
I know the movie but I wonder how the transfer look? |
It looks like a cheap thriller from the late Seventies. Picture and sound are flawed but adequate, though the image was a bit weaker than I expected; too many print defects - especially grain - and other concerns. It's not terrible, but it's not good either...

So, right now it's not worth the price...?

I agree with Oatsdad.

This DVD is much better than any previous home video edition and about 10 times better than when I saw it the theater a few times. The color scheme has always been muted and there are lots of shadows. The film-makers really re-created the seedy areas of LA VERY well - Tracy's apartment is just sooo real. Her walk home from the bar is as close you can get to real urban terror as you can get (like you can get mugged or attacked at any moment while walking the streets). Dr. Mandrakis's house is as creepy a setting I have ever seen (easily eclipsing such modern settings as those found in Poltergeist and Scream) - the tension just gets you really involved since you can easily put yourself into that same situation.
Cheaply shot...indeed! |
