Phantasm

I have yet to see this movie and would like a review of it. If I elect to watch it I am not expecting much in the way of video or audio quality, I just want a good scare. Any thoughts?? 9.99 at Best Buy. Is it worth it?

Without a doubt yes, a great 70's horror film, and a very good SE dvd.

Tylenol 09-10-01 10:10 PM

not scary but VERY AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!

Kainan 09-11-01 11:44 AM

Don't let the fact that this movie is old fool you. The SE version has VERY GOOD sound and a picture that is actually quite good. This is a GREAT movie and an AWESOME DVD. I put this up there with some of the best DVD remasters to date. It is simply stunning to me what they have done with the material that they had. The DD 5.1 sounds great! Not like a horror film released today but still great.

I rank the Phantasm DVD in the top 10 horror discs released. (maybe even top 5).

:) The fact that it is not like horror films released today is what makes it great! :D

The pre-digested pablum that passes for horror these days certainly makes me more appreciative of the last great wave of horror films (1970's)....

Alright, you guys have almost got me talked in to buying it. I want to see a true classic horror film. Today's "so called horror" movies just don't cut it.

This movie is far from a "classic horror film." Prepare yourself for some serious cheese.

HEY!! Tell me where else you can find a silver ball that flies around, sticks into people's heads, and then drills a hole to spurt blood!!! This is CLASSIC all the way man!

Okay...maybe classic in a cheesy sense. But defintely not a classic in a "good" sense. :)

Enough of this tee-heeing over Phantasm. It's brilliant, that's all there is to it. I'll have my buddy The Tall Man come over to your house and squash y'all into midgets and blast you through an interdimensional portal, BBBBOOOYYYYYY.

Geofferson 09-14-01 09:49 AM

Phantasm is indeed a cult classic. If not by its brilliant score, then by the flying silver ball that was mentioned earlier. It's a one-of-a-kind.

Hey, what horror film doesn't have serious cheese factor?! Phantasm is brilliant.

It's original, creepy, and while not the bloodfest/slasher movie the kids like today, it's by far one of the best horror flicks around.

Back in the day, the trailer for it on TV was enough to freak me out! Yeah, the sequels were overly cheesey, but the original was a pure work of art.

I'll step up to defend the sequels a little. Phantasm is great 70's low budget, drive-in, weirdo horror, no doubt. Part 2 though is equally as good because they had a better budget, tighter script and acting, and they took the Evil Dead 2 balancing scary serious and tongue in cheek approach. I'll give you Part 3 was a normal just okay horror sequel and Part 4 was a waste, but part 2 is great.

OK, you're right. It's been awhile since I've seen pt. 2, but I remember it was a very good straightforward flick. Not as creepy and definitely more action oriented; but it stands head and shoulders above the others.

$9.96 at Wal-Mart for anyone interested......

HKFlix 09-22-01 09:47 PM

Wow, for $9.99!? Definitely. This is one of my favorite discs in my collection. It's so obvious that the guys who made this film really did it out of love for the project and had a lot of fun. And I definitely have to say that Michael Baldwin (who played the young boy) is a really good actor. He truly stands out in the cast as someone who can emote and be believable.

Oh, and yes, the supplemental materials rock!
