These two sounds interesting, can someone provide some review?

Wages of Fear

At $24.99 MSRP, it's low for a Criterion Collection DVD. However, it has little besides the uncut version of the film, subtitles, and chapters. I would've liked to seen everything subtitled (since there is a mix of French, Spanish, German, English, and other languages in the movie), but otherwise no qualms about the translation.

The transfer is pretty good, and that's all I will say as I don't have a particularly top-end reference system.

Now, onto the most important part: the actual film. Although Wages of Fear is molasses-slow for the first hour, it picks up thereafter, giving us three different action sequences where Clouzot does a wonderful job of really packing in the suspense. Remember the movie is from the 1950s so don't expect too many special effects or fancy camera work. If you can find this title for under $25 and are a fan of:

- older suspense classics
- tropical/foreign adventure films
- arguments against American capitalism
- Clouzot (the director or his incredibly sexy wife, who is in Wages)

I would say buy it sight unseen... I did and was pretty happy about it. I would probably see the movie every 8 months or so.

I have only seen THE WAGES OF FEAR and I would highly recommend it. It is an excellent suspense/adventure about a group of Europeans transporting nitroglycerine for an American oil company through the rugged terrain of the jungles of South America. A real nail-biter.

Out of four stars, I give it: ****

Note:There is an American remake of this film, directed by William Friedkin and starring Roy Scheider called SORCERER.

Wages of Fear

Terrific film: some top notch performances perticularly from Yves Montand and Charles Vanel, lots of beautiful shots with an emphasis on light and shadow contrast, great tense score by George Auric, and great direction and editing by Clouzot. A must-see for serious film buffs and lots of nerve-wracking suspense for everyone... And this is the only complete version of the film available.

Four stars all the way****
