Perhaps if it were on TV and every other station were running early 80s sitcoms... I'd still be hard pressed to watch Red Planet over the competition.

Ah, climb down off your high horse, buddy. Waller in the gutter with the rest of us. Red Planet is mindless fun! It's got some gee-whiz effects like these flexible video-screen maps, some groovy space suits an robotic Labrador Retriever that gets its switch flipped from "Scratch and Sniff" to "Crush, Kill and Destroy." Happens all the time on Mars.

I thought it was better than a lot of people gave it credit for. It's certainly not the best (or even close ) but it was watchable and much better than Mission to Mars. I'm waiting for it to hit the cheap shelf (

The disc is rated extremely well as for video and audio. It's the story that is in question.

I bought this film because my wife saw the trailer and thought it looked good ( or maybe that was just her opinion of Val Kilmer), so I purchase it on sale for $12.99. I realize now that I would have been erked even if I had only spent $1.99 on a five day rental. I don't care how good the movie looks or sounds it is pretty stale. Lots of movies with a lot less talented casts out there that are better. Pitch Black MUCH, MUCH better in the same categorie. Not to mention the effects are better.

I thought "RED PLANET" was LIGHT YEARS better than that POS "MISSION TO MARS."

But:

Spoiler:
It was stupid to kill off Terence Stamp so early in the film.

Written by a Navy SEAL, so it's got a slightly more military feel to some scenes which I thought was interesting. The sets and costumes are awesome. The cockpit where Trinity hangs out has a lot of pretty lights! Anyway, it's beautiful to look at, but subtle enough to not distract from the story.

On the other hand, the movie doesn't have much replay value. I don't know why Warner stopped adding good extra features to their bombs - They could only help sales. It's like, "We know most of you hated this movie, so now we're going to make the only selling point of the DVD the movie itself!" Brilliant.

Better than Mission to Mars, barely. Good quality audio and video though.

I thought this movie is pretty good. Video quality is excellent (honestly I bought it because of this).

I can safely say it was the worst, most dull film I have seen in the past year.

Then again, I don't go out to the movies that much anymore.

I suppose the A/V quality at least is very good.

I didn't think it was as terrible as some of the comments imply. It is worth a rental, especially a cheap rental like Blockbuster's 30 for $30 or some similar deal. I don't think it is worth a purchase, certainly not worth more than $8-9 bargain price; it is not, in my opinion, a movie that you would watch very many times.

Re: I tried the Search: Is Red Planet any good?

I don't think I've ever resurrected a thread before that was this old but I just finished watching Red Planet on Blu-ray and it was a lot of fucking fun! The video and audio are pretty phenomenal for a 15 year old catalog release. I do like Ghosts of Mars better but RP is way better than Mission to Mars. Surprised that Red Planet director Antony Hoffman didn't direct anything else considering that RP is fun and well directed. It's a nice genre film. Funny enough I didn't care for the film way back then when I rented the DVD.

I paid $4.99 for the Blu-ray, too.

Funny you resurrect this....I just picked this and Mission to Mars up, have faint memories of both, but was in an outerspace mood when I saw them on the shelf.

Bringing this back from the dead once again. Watched this one tonight as I have been on a big space kick lately. Surprised to see how much people shit on it. It was’t great but it was very watchable. But the big takeaway for me was Carrie Anne Moss, I have never been into her before but GOOD GOD was she hot as Hell in this.
