Probably an acquired taste. The Video and Audio is very good. I love the writing of JG Ballard so I have this one in my collection. The cast is good and the direction is solid. The subject matter is disturbing, so approach with some caution.

I thought that this was one of the best movies of 1996. You either love it or hate it. This movie is not for everyone. It is sexually explicit but not erotic and very strange. There are even fans of David Cronenberg that do not like this movie. It explores the relationship between sex and car crashes and how technology has desensitized people. Rent it first. The only thing is that if you rent it you are going to see the 90 minute R rated version which was trimmed by 10 minutes due to the sex. The dvd has this version and the 100 minute NC-17 version.

MY RATING(based on a 4 star rating system): ****
This is my rating because i personally like this movie alot but like I said, before buying rent it first.

Great Movie. Those who don't like it, won't like most creative movies.

Way to generalize...

Some of us happen to be very into 'art' 'obscure' and 'esoteric' cinema and might get NOTHING out of this movie--did that ever occur to you?

By the way, I actually like Crash quite a bit, and went so far as to read the book (which is stunning in a way the movie can't approach). I just can't abide by those types of statements like the one quoted.

I heard, even though the subject matter is very different, it's sort of Fight Club-ish made? Like quick cuts and some REALLY dark humor Is that a true statement?

One out of two.

Dark humor, most definitely, but much more subtle and intellectual than Fight Club.

Editing wise, could not possibly be more different than FC. It's glacially, laguidly paced with no fast cutting at all, which is entirely appropriate for the material. Those with cinema-A.D.D. need not apply.

good film that is highly underappreciated. Glad to see some other positive feedback from others above. Not my favorite Cronenberg, but still very worthwhile.

Technically this film wasn't released in the USA till 1997...

Crash along with Lost Highway and Starship Troopers were my favorite films released in the USA in 1997!

I don't think we'll see Cronenberg, Lynch and Verhoeven releasing pictures in the same year again any time soon!

cheers, Tony Block

PS when Crash opened theatrically, due to scheduling circumstances my girlfriend and I had to drive to the theatre in separate cars and we ended up parking next to each other in a 4 story parking garage (how Ballardian) attached to the theatre.

Call me sick, but I really wanted to rear end my girl friend's car when she left the theatre after seeing this film.
