How is this compared to the series? Do you think this is better than Batman Beyond: ROTJ?

Better than ROTJ? Well, I think so. For one thing it wasn't cut to protect the kiddie's delicate sensibilities.

Good movie, the DVD transfer is mediocre, it's anamorphic but it looks like they used the same print they used for the laserdisc. Adequate, but it could have been much better.

A decent movie, but the story is not the best one I have seen. I liked the Sub-Zero movie much better. Revenge of the Joker is pretty good in its uncut form.

This is the only animated Batman movie I have seen. However, compared to the live action films, this is an easy second place, just behind the original Tim Burton version. MOTP is adult, dark and smart with a bit of humor. Also, It features the voice of Abe Vagota as a gangster! I have not seen this on DVD, but I believe it is reasonably priced, so there you are. If you are a Dark Knight fan you wont be disappointed

Wow, I'm surprised to see so many middling opinions. I have written and said many times in the past that Mask of the Phantasm is the best Batman movie to date, live or animated, and I continue to hold that opinion. Everything is perfect, from the look, to the sound (aggressive Pro Logic surround) to the compelling story. Mark Hamill as the Joker is a delight. I love the Tim Burton films, but mostly for their look and casting. Their stories leave much to be desired. The other live-action Batman films don't even compare. I admire each of the other animated features, but Phantasm still comes out on top.

I pretty much enjoy any episode of Batman and Batman Beyond with the Joker, but I have one question. How in the Hell does Mark Hamill come up with the Joker voice? Is it computer altered? It sounds nothing like his regular voice. I wont even ask about the Hobgoblin.

I think the voice is just him. Of course, they are able to easily use lots of editing if needed. HBO ran a 15 minute behind-the-scenes on this when it was first released & I remember someone talking about how Mark was the only voice actor who had to stand up to do his performance while everyone else sat down. For the probable origins of his Joker, check out the live action Flash tv show from around 1990. He played a character called The Trickster on at least 2 episodes with a similar manic energy. They were released on VHS as The Revenge of the Trickster. (I remember renting it from my Blockbuster a long time ago.) I read that originally Tim Curry was going to do the Joker's voice. I think he even did some recording that was never used.

As for the movie, it's very much like the tv show - but probably with less censoring. It's been awhile since I've seen it. It's as good as the Batman Beyond movie. Whether or not it's better depends on which show & design style you like better. As ROTJ messes with the future, MOTP messes with the past a bit (not nearly as much).

The great voice acting is one of the things I have loved about the Batman series. I hope the JLA series is really going to happen.

Eric F 05-13-01 03:17 PM

If it's anything like the JLA TV movie from a few years back I hope not. :P That being said I'm a big DC fan and I think there are alot more interesting things they can do than just the ordinary kiddie fare. How about a live action series based on Books of Magic or Hellblazer?

I said MotP was a great movie, I was just commenting on how the DVD was somewhat below par.
