Can anyone tell me if Rififi: Criterion Collection is worth buying? i am interested in the film, but only if the special features will make it worthwhile. any insight would be greatly appreciated. thanks.

I haven't gotten around to watching the disc myself, but I've read wonderful things about it:

Hope that helps.

I bought the disc yesterday and ahven't had a chance to watch it yet. Ah! too many movies too little time.

ANYWAYS

Most reviews don't give much info about it, timewise, but I believe I remeber hearing somewhere that the interview with director Jules Dassin is approximately 30 minutes long and the two previous reviews by battboyy
and the one I have included all have good things to say about the extras.

I'll reply back after I view the disc.

It's an absolutely amazing movie - the best film noir film I've ever seen. The transfer quality is surprisingly good. and so are the extras. Actually, the only real extras are the Dassin interview and production notes, which are of typical Criterion quality, i.e. very insightful and interesting. (A trailer is also included.)

Rififi is definitely worth a purchase IMO.

Great movie. All the more reason to be grateful for Criterion. Without them, many great movies would never see the light of day on DVD.

I haven't watched any of the extras, but I was very impressed with the transfer.

Criterion says it is dedicated to publishing the greatest films in the highest technical quality. The movie Rififi is indeed great but the quality of this disc is alas not very high as the French track is horribly out of synch. I hope they will fix that in some future pressing as it is very annoying.

I too noticed a sync problem on my Pioneer DV 333.

This problem was also observed by the DVD File Reviewer, but not by Bob Banka at The Big Picture. I emailed Bob, and he confirmed that on his Pioneer Elite DV-09 there was no problem.

This suggests either issues with certain players, or perhaps a corrected run. Hopefully we will find out soon.

Apart from this, the disc and film are quite wonderful.

there didn't appear to be a sync problem

on my Sony DAV-S300. I just watched the film after reading these posts and the DVDfile review. I was almost afraid to open the disc, but did anyway, and it played fine.

Great interview w/Dassin btw.

cheers, Tony Block

I have an audio dropout in the English dub track right before Tony's about to smack his ex around. Anyone else notice this?

(For what it's worth, I was playing the English dub because it seemed to be rather different than the subtitles, and I was curious about the differences.)
