A very good film by Verhoeven, think of Basic Instinct as a European Art film with lots of Bergman symbolism concerning a male protagonist, a writer, who may be experiencing Roman Catholic visions, or is he having schizophrenic hallucinations, about a female who is involved with him and another male. Also includes a commentary track. A very gorgeous film with an anamorphic transfer. One of my favorite Verhoeven films.

In the director's commentary Verhoven says that he decided to direct Basic Instinct because he had basically already done it with The Fourth Man and could dumb it down for the Americans (he didn't actually say this, but that's my reading on it). Also recommend Soldier of Orange, now out with commentary as well. Turkish Delight, too, but I haven't seen that one yet.

These most excellent posts alerted me to DVDs by a director whose (early) work I admire. With luck, these should be here by the weekend.
Thanks! |
