I just bought the Toshiba 56H80 HDTV Widescreen..... it arrives the 7th of April. I currently own a Sony dvp-S530D and I am very happy with it... owned it 2 years... no problems... no complaints other than it will not read cd-r's.
I am considering buy a new DVD player... progressive scan, but heard that the Toshiba TV'S don't have 3:2 Pull down detection... and a progressive scan player will not make any difference in picture quality. I have no idea what 3:2 pull down is.... so if anyone has this tv and experimented with progressive scan dvd players... please give me some advice. Thanks, HL

Progressive scanning
If you purchased an HDTV chances are it will accept a progressive scanning signal....but, just to be sure, contact Toshiba's customer service directly and ask them if the set will process a 480p signal and also that it has at least one "component video input" (which looks like three RCA jacks in a row).
3:2 pulldown is a term used to describe a specific progressive scanning technology. It is also called 2:3 pulldown. When selecting a DVD player, make sure it has 3:2 pulldown progressive scanning technology; if it doesn't, you're going to get a technology that is NOT really progressive scanning but something that is more a cheap, matrix. The lower priced Pioneer DVD's (model 434, 36, 603 are this type). The cheapest Pioneer unit that is 3:2 pulldown is the model 37. Also, JVC just dropped their retail price on their model 723 from $599 to 399. It has some quirks but I am told it has an excellent picture and it has legititate progressive scanning (I am told). Personally, I like the Toshiba model 6200 which can be had online from aoknet.com for $496 + shipping. It lists for @ $1200. And aoknet.com gives you a 30 day unconditional return guaranty! If you call them talk to Pat and tell her I told you to call. She's a very nice and helpful lady. Hope I've been some help.

if your set accepts a progressive scan input and you have a DVD player with progressive scan output, it doesn't matter if your tv has built in 3:2 detection. from The Perfect Vision website:
3-2 Pulldown A technique for converting 24 frame per second film to 60 field per second interlaced video. Film frames are alternately converted to two or three video fields, always in odd-even field order. Every four film frames, A-D, are converted to 10 video fields (5 video frames) in AoAe AoBe BoCe CoCe DoDe order
