I received a used DVD the other day with a few small cracks around the hole in the center, but none of them actually reached into the layer(s) of the film. When I loaded it up, the player made a somewhat unpleasant noise, but the disc played fine.
However, the next time I put in a different disc, the player still made louder-than-usual noises right when I loaded it (but still played fine).
So my question is this: Can "reading" a crack screw up any mechanisms in a dvd player, or was the noisy second disc just a cooincidence? I'm wondering if I should get rid of that used disc or not.
Anyone? Thanks.

I have rented discs that have the center that has tiny cracks in it. Probably from taking it on and off the holder in the case hundreds of times.
My player has never acted funny when playing these discs. Examine the disc again and make sure a little peice didn't break off into your player or something.

I don't think there can be any physical consequences from trying to play a bad disc. Unless the disc is warped, or ou repeatedly stress the player into trying to read an unreadable disc, you shouldn't be putting any additional wear and tear on your player. IMHO, the problem you have is not directly related to bad discs.
