Since I don't have the money to be a "big spender" right now, I've made the decision to buy a package around $4-500...and then decided for the $400 Philips brand after hearing A LOT of bad stuff about Sony models on this forum.

Question: is Philips equally bad?
Does anyone else have a receiver and/or speakers by Philips that might know?

Thanks for the input. I want the best I can get, but only want to spend $400 right now.

I read all the groups and the Kenwood htb-503 seems to get pretty good reviews for the money. I paid 399 for mine at Sears by using the price matching suggested in a previous post. AAACamera lists it for that price, and Sears matched it. I guess AAA is a bad company, but we thank them for advertising prices they can't live up to.

How do you like the 503?
Can you give me specs on it...like how many/what are the inputs and outputs?

does it have DTS/DD decoders?
video monitor out?
on-screen display?

I'd like to know anything you can tell me!
Hope you're enjoying it.

Also -- how long of speaker wire do people usually get with the HTB's?

Well, Toad,

It's too early to tell. I am new to the HT thing, but so far I am having some problems. Please read my post entitled problem with htb-503 sub. I can't get the thing working properly, and I think it is just something I am doing wrong.

As for the receiver, I don't think it has on screen display, but am not sure yet - don't have it hooked up to the dvd or tv yet. But is has s video inas and outs, plenty of digital ins and outs, even has analog 5.1 inputs for those who need that. I think it will be great as soon as I get everything working. So far, the fronts are all I can really test, and they are excellent for the price range.

Let me know about my other post, and I'll keep you posted on how things progress over the next month or so.

Thanks for the response.

I think they are like 15 to 20 feet for the rears, and a bit less for the fronts. It's very thin and will need replacing with some 18 gauge soon.

Here's the link. http://www.kenwoodusa.com/cat.htm

Just put in htb-503 under pruducts to get the specs
