Does anyone have any suggestions on what the proper way is to set up a home theater. I have a JVC package that includes the 4 sattelites, center, and LFE, and it works fine for these untrained ears, but I'd like to know for sure , how to get the most out of it. Technical information might help, ie. setting the ranges, delays, etc. Could anyone point me in the right direction?

Well, how do you have it set up now? i.e. speaker locations, and distances, etc.

Set up

The viewing area is about 4ft from the television and front speakers, the front speakers are about 2ft from the tv on either side and the rear surround speakers are 4ft in back of the viewing area.

Are there any sites I can go to that help explain what a good theater should look like?

I'm not sure. To be honest, I'd like to know too. The way I have my room set up, I can't have speakers behind me -- they're basically even with my head. I don't know if I'm missing out or what.

Good luck.

There are two ways to do this, and both should be used:

1) Move things around. Does it sound better to you? Worse?

2) Get a copy of Avia or Video Essentials and an SPL Meter to properly calibrate your system.

After you do these, you should notice an improvement.

Questions about those things:

Where do you get them?
How much do they cost?
What the heck do they do?? Does the calibrator tell me if the sound sounds good HERE vs. THERE?

You can get Avia or VE online, or at a B&M store like Best Buy. Each of these DVDs run $35-$50. You can get the SPL meter from Radio Shack for around $30.

Thanks. But what do they do? And how do you use the calibrator thing...and why would you?

The following links describe how to use the SPL meter, preferably in conjunction with Avia or VE, although the test tones on your receiver/preamp will work in a pinch. Just make sure that you set up the SPL meter at your listening position. For best results the SPL meter should be mounted on a tripod (standard camera tripod will do)
