I'm sorry if this is a silly question, but I bought a Pioneer VSX-d409 open box with no manual and I have a quick question.

What are the 5.1 inputs or outputs for on the back of my receiver used for?

I have my dvd player hooked up thru the optical digital input, and I get DTS and digital signals. But there is a 5.1 button on the front , and 5 input or output jacks (they look like RCA jacks) on the back. What are these used for?

Thanks.

If they are inputs you would use them if you used your 5.1 outputs on your DVD player or from a seperate 5.1 decoder.

If they are outputs(pre-amp outs) then you would use them if you were using outboard amplifiers.

You can go to their website and check if you can download a manual for your receiver.

Make sure that you're not confusing input with output.
Read the connectors behind the receiver carefully.
If they are indeed 'input' terminals, it is because your receiver was designed to be a '5.1 ready' receiver. This means that should you decide to purchase an external 5.1 decoder (i.e. found in some DVD players or stand alone decoder boxes), your receiver can accept the 5.1 signal and send that data to 6 discrete channels(speakers).

Hope this helps.

Not necessarily true. My Yamaha DD/DTS receiver has 5.1 inputs. These are for future 5.1 formats like the currently available DVD Audio that cannot be decoded by the receiver, but has to be decoded externally before being sent to the receiver.
