Hey folks,
I was told long ago, that it was bad to play any CD's on your DVD player because the laser has to adjust to different speeds, etc. Is this right? Will it cause more wear and tear on your DVD player to play CD's? I, as does everyone else here, have a HUGE DVD collection and that is my main reason for buying a DVD player- not to play CD's so I want to ensure that my DVD player plays DVD's first and foremost.
Thanks.

Never heard that before. If you are worried about it I'd recommend just buying a CD player

Nah, don't worry about it normy, it won't bother it (DVD player) at all. In fact, I've never heard that before. DVD players are made to play CDs and will work just fine.

I don't know if it is true but I have heard that before. Before I bought my DVD player I did some research. I read somewhere that In order for most DVD players to play CD's they have to refocus the laser which leads to more wear and tear. IT's the reason why I bought a Sony DVD player. Although this is no longer the case from what I understand my player has two optcal pickups, one for DVD's and one for CD's leading to less wear and tear. Most if not all DVD players today only have one optical pickup or laser.

Now I can't 100% confirm the above but it leaves food for thought. I have a Sony DVP-S300 and have had it for over two years now. I use it more for playing CD's then DVD's and it is still going strong.

Normy, unless you just want a CD player for mult-disk capablilities or to buy some high end player for audiophile sound, your Sony player will do just fine. Personally, I wouldn't buy a CD player - I'd use the DVD player you already own. Before you wear that thing out, you'll want a new player for some other reason, like progressive scan, DVD-A, SACD, or even HD or something.
