Sorry if this has been asked before. My question is concerning 16:9 HDTVs, when playing DVDs with different aspect ratio's (2.35:1, 1.85:1, etc.) does the picture fill the entire widescreen regardless of the ratio?

The aspect ratio of an HDTV set is 1.78:1. Movies in that ratio will fill the screen entirely, movies in 1.85:1 will have small bars at the top and bottom, but depending on the overscan of your set may or may not be seen at all. 2.35:1 movies will have larger black bars, and actually look similar to what a 1.85:1 movie will look like on a 4:3 tv.
This assuming all DVDs played back on the set are anamorphic discs. Non-anamorphic discs are a whole 'nother issue.
