I'm new to the scene of all this Home Theatre Jazz so bare with me me

I just got an Aiwa DVD player that also plays MP3/VCD/CDRW for only 200 bucks! I was told that Aiwa is actually Sony so I was bought on that. Watched gladiator and was marveled at the sound that was coming through my Kenwood VR-405 reciever in Dolby Digital. I noticed that both my reciever and DVD player have optical audio input/outputs.

Should I buy the wires? Have you guys noticed a more crisper, higher quality sound? It already sounds great, I wonder how much better it can get...

Data integrity is better with light signals (virtually lossless) than with electronic signals along wires (coax or RCA cables) because electronic wires will always have signal loss (usually in the form of signal attenuation). However, these effects are minimal and the consensus seems to think that you'll only notice a difference if you have a really killer sound system. But, for the average consumer like you and I, you're not losing much, if anything, by using a coax or an RCA cable.

Just my opinion.

Are you currently using a coaxial digital connection? If you are, there really is no reason to switch to the optical connection. If you are using the RCA cables, then you are not haring 5.1 sound, just normal pro-logic in which case, either a coaxial or optical digital connection whould make a dramatic difference.

I went Coax, and love it. I also have an optical cable, and use that on my second player. Both sound the same to me. The key, I think, is getting a GOOD cable, either way.

Since an optical won't cost you a paycheck(Hopefully ) , you can always buy one and try it out. You can keep it as a spare, or return it if you don't notice the difference.

I really don't notice any difference, but I am not an audiophile.

I agree. There is not much, if any, difference between coaxial digital and optical digital wiring. However, you are losing with an RCA cable if that is what you are currently using.

Once again, it's time to clarify something (this seems to happen daily in this forum) -- you DO NOT need a coax cable or an optical cable in order to get 5.1 signals from your DVD player into your receiver.

You CAN use any cable (including a standard RCA cable), even a coat hanger or any other piece of metal that will conduct electricity, so long as you have one end connected to the digital out on the DVD player and the other to your receiver/decoder.

Sorry for not clarifying what connection I was using. It was RCA. I just hooked up my Optical connection(man that red light shooting out of it is bright!) and once again have reached a higher playing field in HiFi. This sounds 10x better! Thanks!

It's not sick when you consider that 1) Most of the posts are in the Other Forum, which are usually just a bunch of smart-ass 1 liners and 2) 90% of my posts come from work, where I'm a programmer who checks DVDTalk every so often throughout the day. So basically 90% of my posts have been paid for by my company

I must apologize in behalf for this influx of Other Forum regulars. Someone left the cage unlocked and are probably quite confused being in this strange forum about DVD Hardware.

Don't stress DTSC, I'll stick up for ya dude!

On the question at hand, I use optical for both car and home and the signal difference while hard to tell, is always gonna be better without electrical interference.

Yeah, but sometimes I have something to say.
As for optical versus coax, use the cheapest one you can get that works. But make sure the coax is 75 ohm (video cable) if you are going a long distance.

For whatever it's worth, several months ago Home Theater Magazine did a "shootout" on digital coax vs. optical audio cables and in every case the coax came out on top by a slight margine. You might be able to find the article in the archives of their web site hometheatermag.com.

FYI, Aiwa is a totally independent and seperate company and has no connection to Sony.

Damn that Circuit City guy! That's what he told me. It's sony guts. Ahhh well, as long as it plays I should be fine...

I wasn't dissing you,DTSC.

"Sick" is a slang word around here that means,"extreme." Sort of an odd way of saying things but that's how my friends and I talk.

And BTW, I did the calculation at work, so in other words, my company paid for it

This has got to be one of the busiest forums I've ever seen.

I had a feeling that's what you meant, but most people here aren't into the hip lingo you whippersnappers use now days.

It's kinda like how sometimes "bad" means "good" but old people think that when something's "bad" that it's horrible.

Whatever. I wasn't offended anyway.
