Now, I've been quite confused as to what this V compression does.

I have the Sony KV36FS16 with Component Video Cables hooked up to a Panasonic DVD Player.

Now, when watching DVD (with the black bars on top) and I turn on the V Compression, i makes the pictures look squished (meaning that the viewable area because smaller and the black area becomes bigger)

Am I doing something wrong?

I heard that if you can make your DVD player push the vid outs like it is kicking out to a 16x9, that your picture will be better.

You have to set your DVD player to output to a 16 x 9 TV. Then turn on the Enhanced Mode on the Wega. This trick only works for anamorphic (enhanced for widescreen TVs) DVDs. It will give you 33% more resolution and does make a big difference.

Darthkin, I just got the same TV as yours. The vertical compression feature was one of my most important reasons for getting the Wega. The other night I watched Gladiator with component video and vertical compression. As peskoe150 said, I first had to change the DVD picture output to "wide" on my Pioneer 919 DVD/laserdisc player (your Panasonic may call it something else).

If you haven't yet done it, do it now. You will not be disappointed.
