Wondering about banding/dirty screen effect
 

Hi all,

So, I am thinking at taking another stab at a 4k TV. I've been waiting on PS5 availability for a player to snag the TV but tired of waiting and will probably just get a 4k player.

I have tried three times in the past to pick up a 4k TV but all of them had banding that, once I noticed, I couldn't unsee.

Are there any brand names, tv models that are known to have less of this if none at all?

I'd be looking for something that could do Dolby Vision if possible.

I was thinking that OLEDs might not have the same banding issues as LCD/LED sets, but I googled and found this photo on AVS:

Yeah, I found that too and other pics like it when it came to OLED (which, like you, I figured would be better).

I guess I'd rather watch movies on an older TV that only does 1080 then risk these streaks on the screen that I had with the last three 4ks.

Supposedly that's significantly less of an issue with OLED now than it was even just a couple of years ago.

(Although certainly for OLEDs of a certain age, it is an issue, and at least in my case -- a 65B7 -- more distracting than most people make it out to be. You usually hear people say "banding, yeah, but only on very rare occasions, like looking at test patterns". I get the banding on basically anything vaguely of a certain tone. If it's foggy or misty at night, if someone's in a cave, if there's a whole lotta gray...)

I really noticed it playing video games when you do quick pans around more rapidly then, say, a usual film. It just drove me bonkers.

That picture is pretty bad, but every TV I've had going back to CRTs has had some kind of slight imperfection. I've learned over the years that you can't worry about some things too much or you'll just go nuts.
