DVD/VCR combo - DVD doesn't work

At my parents' house for Thanksgiving and was trying to set up their Magnavox DVD/VCR combo player with their LG smart TV.

The TV doesn't even recognize that the player is on when trying to connect via component cables, so I selected the input via coax. The VCR mode will display and plays VHS fine. The DVD mode, however, displays either a snowy or black screen and the machine will switch back to VCR mode after 10-15 seconds. My dad said this isn't a new problem and that unplugging the machine for a few minutes and plugging it back in would solve the issue in the past and the DVD player would work again. I've done that a few times, but the DVD issue hasn't cleared up.

After spending much longer than I would've have liked trying to solve this and reading up on multiple message boards (there's a post in this forum that sounds similar but required hardware repair) and YouTube videos connecting things in the various ways that were instructed to no avail, I figured I'd post on this board to see if anyone had any ideas.

My assumption is that the DVD player no longer works on the machine. Is there anything anyone knows that can be done short of hardware repair (or simply buying a DVD player) or are there any settings on the TV and DVD/VCR machine that could possibly be setup that might resolve this issue? Thanks!

I think the problem is that it’s old. Go to a Goodwill or some place that sells used players like that. They’re usually cheap and in good working condition.
