Hi, just came across this site and would like some advice please, am new to HT...Just purchased a Sony HTK-170 Theatre Kit and a Sony DVP S536 DVD player...problem is I can't get the 5.1 to work, there is a digital
conn. on the back of the dvd but not on the receiver, but both items have rca connectors on the back. Was supplied with a S-Video cable but nowhere to plug it in the TV...Please help missing all the fantastic sounds

I think you might be out of luck. According to what you say there is no digital input on the Sony HTK-170 Theatre Kit . This would lead me to beleive it is not DD capable as if ti was it would have a digital input. Without this input capability you will not be able to get DD5.1 on your current setup. By theway if by RCA connectors you mean red, white and yellow connectors/jacks, these will give you at best pro logic sound (which is matrixed surround) and not DD5.1.

You might want to post some more details about the capabilities and inputs of the Sony HTK-170 Theatre Kit so that someone can confirm whether this is true or not.

By the way the S-Video cable is for video only and is a better alternative to the yellow RCA composite video cable, but if you do not have an S-Video connection on your TV it will not be any good.

Finally it looks like you are from the UK. You may also want to post this question in the "International Forum" as someone there might be more familiar with this hardware.
