Over the past month Home Cinema Choice Online in the UK has been investigating poor picture quality from certain DVD players. The problem is sporadic artifacting throughout movies, especially on dark areas.
The following players have been noted for this problem:
LOGIX 3000
SCAN 2000
MANHATTAN 2000
HITACHI 505
APEX
and a certain DENON.
All these players have one thing in common, they all use an ESS mpeg decoder!
I have had two of the above players and can concure that the picture mostly is good but those artifacts come to bare from time to time and can be annoying.
So If your after a DVD player mainly for excellent picture quality dont get an ESS player!
This is a great pitty as the ESS chipset looks great on paper, especially with its built in loopholes menu.
But at the end of the day ESS dont measure up to Zoran or C-Cube, Hitachi know this as they have changed to a C-Cube for their 705 model which is just a 505 with a jog/shuttle on.
BEWARE!
