Re: TCL Tv's

Is there a setting to force the sound from the streaming services/Roku TV through the receiver? Right now the sound only comes through the TV speakers while the cable (or other source) sound is still coming out of the receiver.

Shoot, sorry... Just saw this post. I guess my only update is that I do love the TV. I've had literally no problems with it and can't recommend it enough for the price point.

Since the Roku is integrated you'll have to output the TV sound to your receiver (and probably mute your tv). Is there an optical out on your tv?

I believe there is. I'll confirm and, if so, I'll give it a try.

That worked, thanks much!

I don't know what DSE is but when you say "jailbars" are you talking about a faint vertical bar that scrolls from the bottom to the top of the screen? If so I have this problem. It's only really noticeable during very light scenes.

Jailbars are dark vertical columns caused by the spacing between the LEDs, where the TV doesn't disperse the light evenly. DSE, or dirty screen effect, is bad screen uniformity when displaying a single solid color. Tests are usually done on a gray screen, and DSE will look like darker sections on the screen, or like the screen has dirty spots.

I'm now in the market for a 75" 8 series TCL. Best Buy had it down to $1999 for one day, but I didn't have my finances in order quick enough to jump on it. Hoping they bring it down to that price again soon.

Re: TCL Tv's

The 2020 models look amazing. The Series-5 model is going to have QLED and Full Array Local Dimming. And the Series-6 will have Mini-LED.

I'm very interested in these. Kind of weird to have vastly different techs on these models - QLED and mini-LED? I wonder how each one will test out. I'm guessing QLED is cheaper to produce than mini-LED?

Re: TCL Tv's

So my TCL shit the bed... first a dead pixel, then another and then... a horizontal line across the entire set just showed up one day over Xmas break. While CSR was an initial pain in the ass, they did agree to send out a repair tech with a new TV. Supposed to get it tomorrow. The whole process is aging at around 3 weeks so I'm not thrilled but at least I'm getting a new TV as opposed to a refurb or a repair. The more I read on these sets, the more the quality concerns me.

Yea, guess I’m done looking into buying a TCL as i always hear way too much horror stories about their QC issues just as Rob pointed out. Panel lottery is what you’ll be buying with TCL.

Re: TCL Tv's

I had it a short time before the first dead pixel... but I can overlook that when I only paid $1500 for that TV. The horizontal line happened at 5 months. I'm with davidlynchfan now... I'd stay away. Great value but you're literally crossing your fingers that nothing goes wrong. The CSR process was super frustrating and I have no idea if my replacement will be a quality product.

The tech is supposed to be at my house this afternoon. I'll let you guys know how that plays out.

Re: TCL Tv's

When I bought my TCL from Amazon last year, I got a 4-Year SquareTrade Warranty for about $20. Luckily, I haven't had to use it. But if you're buying from Amazon, keep an eye out for an inexpensive warranty add-on.

Re: TCL Tv's

From the other thread on banding re: my experience with TCL so far:

During the holidays I picked up one of those TCL TVs everyone is raving about online annnnnnddd...a band or two appeared as the poster above described during lighter scenes, especially grey skies and smoke. I tried, damn it I tried, to ignore this and let it go but my "you can do better" brain thought, well, you can do better. I returned it for same set and, oy, this one is worse: four corners are darker, not only two or three vertical banding lines but also horizontal ones. Trying to play PS4 makes this very obvious.

Seriously, what the hell is up with these televisions?

Going to return this one and hope for the best on #3 but, you know, if you roll the dice each time I am kicking myself for not keeping the somewhat tolerable previous set.

Is this going to be something I'll just have to accept. You'd think they'd have fixed this by now.

Re: TCL Tv's

Nothing is up with them. It's been reported ever since those models came out, that there was a banding issue - some serious, some not. I have some of the issues, but they're really light and infrequent, especially in bright scenes. But overall, it's a great TV and processes DV and HDR very well.

You can always wait until the new models come out in a few months, since they're going to be QLED and mini-LED.

Re: TCL Tv's

Got my replacement TV last night... Tech was 4 hours late but what can you do? TV works, that's all I can report for now. It was so late I didn't get to really set it up beyond getting it online and confirming Roku was linked. I hope this lasts me at least a few years until I can go all in on an OLED without the wife exploding.

Re: TCL Tv's

Occasionally, I'll notice some banding when there's a gradient. Like when someone's holding a candle in a pitch black house. But I don't notice it on 4K content. Sometimes I'll switch between UHD and HDX on Vudu. The banding goes away and the colors really pop in 4K.

Re: TCL Tv's

I just bought a new TCL TV for the bedroom. It's the 2018 43-inch Series 4 model with 4K HDR10 (TCL 43S425). It's crazy that you can get a 4K TV with Roku for under $230.

I would have bought the 2019 Series 5 model for $300, but the feet were too far apart and wouldn't fit on my stand.

Re: TCL Tv's

I like TCL P series because of its colourful and bright HDR. Price is also affordable. But according to my friend who purchased it 2017 complaints about its halo effect.

Re: TCL Tv's

Did you mean Vizio? Vizio has their series as letters (P series, M Series), whereas TCL uses numbers like 6 Series, 7 Series, etc.

Re: TCL Tv's

Weird. Upcoming TCL TV’s will also be sold with the Android OS alongside Roku. I guess this for those who totally hate the Roku platform.
