What settings are you guys using for HDR and Dolby Vision? I've maxed out all the brightness settings, but it still seems darker than regular 1080p settings.

I post my settings in a bit, but also make sure you download and use the Roku app. There’s additional TV settings you can use to tweak your TV. These additional settings aren’t available on the TV settings.

If they lowered that TV to about 1K, I would buy it. I would totally be ok with paying the $600 for a 55 but almost 2k for 75? That's pushing it for me.

Re: TCL Tv's

Yeah, because so many 75” TV’s are under $1k. TCL will more than likely sell boatloads of these. And hopefully they can fix the issue of the panel lottery in making them without the dirty screen effect, then it’ll be even better.

Hell, I'd pay that $969 for the 65 but not $1800 for a 75.

E Unit 01-09-19 11:34 PM

Re: TCL Tv's

Pricing like that has been going on forever, where 75” TV’s are about double as the 65” version. Don’t see why that would ever change.

Does the TCL 5 Series still have the Dolby Vision bug?

It's fixed with the 9.0 software. But the upgrade rollout has been slow. If you still have the old 8.2 software, contact the Roku support rep in this thread (below). They can push the latest software to your TV.

Have not brought the TCL 5 Series yet. But been reading about the Dolby Vision bug. I also been hearing about audio sync problems using any soundbar hooked up to optical.
I almost brought the TCL 65S405 from Target for about $460 + tax. But did not pull the trigger. Thought about stepping up to the 55" in the 5 series.

I have the TCL 55S517. I got it about 4 months ago. Paid around $450 ($430 + tax) at Amazon. You might be able to find it cheaper now. I think you'd be hard pressed to find a better TV in this price range. It's not perfect, but I'm happy with it.

I don't know about the soundbar audio sync problems. I use the Roku wireless speakers. And I haven't had any problems with those.

I have a few minor gripes. The biggest one was the Dolby Vision bug, but that has been fixed.

When watching DV/HDR content, the picture is a little dark. I think this is because the backlight isn't very strong (compared to much more expensive 4K TVs). To compensate, I have the Brightness and Color settings pumped up. It doesn't bother me much. But it's noticeable when switching between UHD and HDX on Vudu.

When watching dark movies in a dark room, I notice the corners of the screen are brighter. I guess this is because it's edge lit. I only notice this when I'm watching horror movies with all the lights out in the middle of the night. But if I'm watching regular stuff, I don't see it.

Also, the settings out of the box are a mess. There aren't a lot of settings to tweak. But I spent a long time trying to find the sweet spot.

That's all I can think of right now. Overall, I'm very happy with the TV. Don't expect the same quality as a $900 TV. But for $450, it's really nice. Bright, colorful movies look great in UHD. Movies like Avengers Infinity War really pop in 4K.

TCL has finally released their soundbars. I like the prices. $80 for a small basic model. Up to $190 for a large model with wireless subwoofer.

This is a stupid question but I wonder if I can use one of these even though I have a full surround set up (receiver, speakers sub) for when I want to casually watch TV & not have the surround system going.

Why would you ever want to do that? My sound system goes on for everything, even the news. Why would I spend all that money on it just to not use it? (My dad often uses his TV speakers even though he's got a full sound system, and I ask him if he's been going deaf.)

Because I want this soundbar. I only use my surround setup when watching movies. If I'm just channel surfing late at night I don't use it. I have an old Toshiba 32" in my bedroom along with an old Philips soundbar, maybe I'll buy another TCL TV along with the soundbar for the bedroom setup although I rarely ever watch TV in there anyway.

Best Buy is selling the Series 6 55" for $499.

Amazon dropped the Series 6 66" to $783.54.

My walmart has a 65Ē 4K for $499. Didnít check the series number.

For that price, probably a Series 5. Still, damn good price.

Yeah, that one doesn't have DV, so it's a pass. Last week Amazon was selling the 65" TCL for $719, which was the current Series 6, but now it's back to $819.

Re: TCL Tv's

Yeah, it's starting with the Series 6 that includes DV and WCG.

Re: TCL Tv's

The 5 series has Dolby Vision. It doesn't have local dimming, or whatever TCL calls it.
