The Sony remote is good, but if you can afford it, I'd go with the Philips Pronto. It not only has the touch-screen features of the Sony, but you can customize it to your hearts content with software and your PC. They have a good review of it at RemoteCentral.

Anyone know if the One For All remotes are any good? I have been looking at this one and I was wondering in anyone could give some input:

I would definitely check out http://www.remotecentral.com they have all kinds of reviews on all these remotes. I just ordered the Sony RM-VL900. It only cost me $44 with a 20% off coupon from Critical Path (coupon expired already). This remote received good reviews from consumers and the site. I haven't received it yet, but, if all the reviews are true, you can't beat the value. It is a learning remote with 3 macro buttons. Matches my Wega. I can't wait. Of course, if you have the money go with the Pronto or the Harmon Kardon. Good luck.

Goblincat, Check out the reviews of the One for all at http://www.remotecentral.com If I remember correctly, it didn't receive many good reviews.

If you can afford it, the Marantz (i think its Mark II) remote is AMAZING. But, I think it's 250-300...

A good "cheapie" remote that does lots (including some learning, plus many undocumented features!) is the One-for-All CInema 7 remote for about $25. As others have suggested, check out remote-central.com. They also have a FAQ on this remote. I use it for my bedroom system (tv, surround mini-stereo, vcr, cable and dvd) with no problems. Has volume control 'punch-through' etc. It won't do every last little thing of all the individual remotes, but all of the main functions (and many minor ones) are abvailable and can be remapped as desired.

Guys..does the Philip touch screen remote and Sony's remote..for dvd..allows the tray to open or close?

Just wondering if these Universal remotes do this like the dvd player's remote. That would be so cool.

Radio Shack RM 15-1994. Controls 7 things, is a learning remote, and is back lit. It works great and goes for $40, and is usually on sale for $30 every couple of months. I just don't understand how some people can spend $200-300 bucks or more on a remote. I guess some people have more money than they no what to do with. http://talk.dvdtalk.com/ubb/smile.gif

As a proud Phillips Pronto owner, I can easily justify the $193 I spent on it. For starters, it replaces the 6+ remotes I used to have, and can easily replicate all of my remote's features, something most cheaper universal remotes simply can't do. Also it has the capabilities to have any shape button I want, add graphics and logos, and control other things besides AV equipment, like home automation devices (lights, security, etc). Plus, it justs looks so damn cool http://talk.dvdtalk.com/ubb/wink.gif

Yes. Since the Philips is a learning remote, it can learn any command that your original remotes can do. I rarely use the open/close remote feature, but my Philips does support it.

Where did you pick up the Pronto for $193? I'd been looking at the UCommand 616 (found it for $174 shipped) but for $193 I'd pick up the Pronto in a heartbeat. Thanks!

This is the one I have also - wanted the $200, but the wife shot me down, so I settled for this, and am VERY happy with it. Went back and got another for the bedroom.

In the living room I control: CD player, Receiver, Digital cable, DVD, VCR, TV...

Cool! I really like the way it looks and I'm sick of having to use 4 remotes to watch TV and DVDs (TiVo remote for channels, Kenwood remote for volume since TiVo remote won't work with my receiver, DVD remote, and Sony TV remote since the other 3 don't have the tv/video button to switch to DVD). I just gotta talk the wife into it now. http://talk.dvdtalk.com/ubb/wink.gif

TonyS,
I picked up the Pronto from mercata.com during one of their 'powerbuys', and also used their 20% off for being a new customer and an additional 20% off from Microsoft Passport. The deal did expire already, but I would keep checking back to the site in case it comes up again. I was thinking of getting one anyway, and when I stumbled upon this deal, I snatched it up.

Another vote for the Phillips Pronto. It is a universal remote and so much more. Check out Remote Central and you'll see people who have stored their address book, reciepes, dvd collections and so much more on this thing. It's been very fiance friendly!

TruTerrapin 11-28-00 03:10 PM

Okay, First I really really want to thank everyone who helped w/ this quest. Now after reading reviews & features on www.remotecentral.com I came away with 4 finalist. Sony's RM-AV2100, Crisp Solution UCommand 616, Philips Pronto, & Harman/Kardon Take Control. I am now looking at which remote will fit my system (and budget :-) the best. so far, pound for pound or should I say once for once I think the UCommand 616 is the best. thanks fellas

Still Searching,
-Tru

Marantz RC2000 MK II! The last remote anyone will ever need! This isn't really a touch screen but that's what I like about it the best. Touch screens piss me off. Do you really want to have to look down when changing the channel? This is a full learning remote (does anything your remote can do) and in my opinion the best remote ever. Of course if you got the cash go all out and get Escient or Lexicon systems...but let's not go nutz.

audrey 11-29-00 09:03 AM

I have both the sony 2100 and pronto. Both are excellent if you like touchscreen remotes. I would avoid the HK as the IR beam is very narrow and weak. In my experience you have to point the HK directly at the device which makes executing global macros difficult.

A lot of people prefer hard keys to touchscreen because with practice you can operate the remote without looking at the keys. If you are one of these people you may not like either the sony, philips, or HK.
