Anyone have an in-wall subwoofer?
 

We are building a house and I'm planning to do in-wall speakers. Contemplating doing the subwoofer in-wall, as well. It appears most of them aren't amplified, though. Will it get amplification from my Sony 5.1 receiver or do I need to purchase a separate amplification unit for it?

Well that depends on whether you have a passive or active subwoofer.

I would not place a sub in wall as you need a special cavity built to handle the vibration. In addition placement can be tricky for sound balancing and you are restricted to a front firing sub as opposed to a down firing sub.

I was looking at a passive one from Monoprice. Discovered I would need a separate amplifier. I have a 10" down firing JBL N series sub right now but placement of it in the new home may be difficult. Plus I was trying to avoid it being out and as visible.

Putting in hardwood floors so it will be difficult or unsightly to have cable to sub, too.

If you are building put the cabling for the sub in the wall, all you need to do this is standard RG6 coax cable from the location of the receiver to the location of the sub. You can then put in wall plates on both ends with a connector that changes from RG-6 to F type that will connect to your sub. Those wall plates and connectors are available from monoprice. I have not been impressed with in wall subs, they are a huge comprimise but can work.

Thanks. I'm tempted to give it a shot. I would have them frame around the area and box it in with MDF and seal it well. I don't need house shaking bass but it would be nice to get enough out of it to make movies enjoyable.
