I just got the 36" Sony Wega from 800.com during that glorious sale courtesy of Bill Gates. Anyway, I've noticed a definate difference in darkness from the left to right hand side of the screen. This is extremely obvious whenever the screen goes dark, but fairly distracting during dark scenes. Also, any material I watch in widescreen (in enhanced mode), no matter where the black bar is, there is this slight line at to top and bottom of the screen right before it goes black. What is happening with my set? Anybody else see this? Thanks

I have a relatively new 36"-inch WEGA and haven't had anything like what you're describing.

This is a VERY well known problem with Wegas.
Do a search on the Hardware forum.

You can also search www.hometheaterforum.com, and you'll find quite a bit there.

There is no known fix, but I've noticed that with my set properly calibrated (Avia) and the enhanced black option used on my DVD, that it is much less noticeable.

Have you tried setting the picture with Avia or HT Essentials? This might help.

I have a difference in darkness too.

My top left side of the screen is darker than the rest. (About 6 inches long and 1.5 inches tall).

I found out that the difference was less when I use the S-video connection.
(Compared to the component connection.)
So I use S-video now.

Do you also have a problem when you turn on the TV?
On mine there is a quick white flash on the bottom left and right of the screen. (Just a few inches squares.)

Is this an XBR or not?

I have a new 36XBR400 and do not have this problem.

Have you moved it? Turned it 90 degrees? It could be a magnetic field from earth or your house wiring. If you can move it around and you still have it, get it replaced or repaired.

I have an xbr250 and I have the exact problem that you describe. All I know is that the one side being darker than the other is a common problem, but I don't know how to fix it. I've used a calibration disc and nothing changed. I have the line at the top and bottom of widescreen movies too, but it never really bothered me. I guess I'm not too helpful am I.

Mine isn't the XBR. I've calibrated it with Video Essentials. Maybe I should ask for a new one, but not sure if it's worth the hassle if this is a common problem. Love the set otherwise..

Sony WEGA owners: Please try this test.

Switch to a video source with no input.
(you get a black screen)
then turn on the brigthness to 3/4 (or more).
(Not for long as it may damage your set.)

Do you see a stable image or some interferences?

Personally I get some interferences.
I was wondering if this was normal,
or if everyone should get this?

Well, what have other's experiences been that have had a similar problem (I've searched both here and HTF and still can't find any treads dealing with this. One kinda related in HTF) But upon having the set replaced, did the problem go away or is it most likely the conditions of my apartment (i.e. magnetic fields) And how would this work. I got it just a couple weeks ago so would 800.com just send me a new one, or would somebody come out and attempt to fix it? Thanks for the input..

Search HTF for uneven brightness

You will find plenty of discussion, trust me.

There is currently no fix for this problem, and most of us have learned to live with it.

As I said, proper calibration helps to reduce it's noticeability.

Whether to request a new set or not is up to you. I think you will find that some people have returned two or three of these sets and still have the problem.

Over all, this set still looks stunning. Enjoy it.
