Projector vs 4K SUHD
 

Hello,

I'm in the progress of building my media room but undecided of which type of display I should purchase. I'm setting the room with the Onkyo TX-NR646 receiver with a 5.1.2 setup for the Atmos/DTS:X playback. My budget is about $1500 and would like to know which display would you guys recommend? I'm intrigue with the 4K SUHD with HDR. If you have one, what are your thoughts of HDR?

Just an FYI, the term "SUHD" is basically just Samsung's branding of their 4K TV's with HDR. HDR is good shit, I'll tell you that much. I have an LG60UH8500. I've spent a lot of time trying to calibrate it correctly, but I kind of like messing with settings on different movies. It sounds like you're setting up a good media room and have a good receiver, so you'll more than likely appreciate HDR. Just remember to make sure whatever model/brand of TV you get, to make sure it has HDMI 2.2, so you can hook up any future UHD player and be able to utilize the full HDR colors.

Oh, and since you put Projector vs 4K SUHD as your title, Sony is the only player on the market with a 4K UHD projector. But that will set you back an easy $10k. So if you're jonzeing to get 4K HDR, you'll have to go with a panel. And in my opinion, if you're doing a media room, go with 4K. it's only going to get more common in the months/years to come.

Good thread topic. I sorely miss my projector, which I wasn't able to bring to my new house.
I ended up buying a 60" 4K LG. No HDR, though.

I do wish I had spent the extra cash on a HDR set, though.

If I were the OP, even though I really wish I still had a projector, I'd suggest going with a nice HDR 4K set instead.

I have had a projector for the last 9 years and plan to stick with it, I just hope we get some of the nice new features at affordable prices soon.

I replaced my last projector about 3 years ago for $650 for 1080p/3D, I know that's too cheap to ask for but I'd love for it to happen with 4K/HDR/3D. And FWIW, 3D on projectors is the only way I find that format acceptable, but it can be impressive still.

We've had our 3D projector for 6 months now with a 135 inch screen and the only regret I have is not getting one sooner. I would always side with the larger screen versus a slightly higher definition, but that's just my opinion. By the time this projector craps out, there should be affordable 4K projectors and the media will be cheaper as well.

I voted projector in my recently complete media room. Hard to beat a 120" screen, it looks FANTASTIC.

I went with the LG PF1500 LED projector ($680 Fry's on sale), almost instant on and the picture is really good. No worries about bulb dimming or replacements.

Had same thoughts as other posters that hopefully will be a cheap 4k projector down the road but right now really happy with giant screen vice a ~60" TV.

Big sound and big picture make it a theater IMHO. :)

I'm looking at buying a new TV (don't have room for a projector) and I'm pretty much settled on a new Samsung 4k HDR. You mention HDMI 2.2, - How do I know if it has this, -I've tried looking it up and all I get is how many HDMI inputs it has, and nothing more specific. Is it more about how recently it was manufactured. I remember getting burned on an early Blu-ray player.

Try to find a review on rtings.com. I believe they list those kinds of specs nicely.

^^ Thats a good site, and should give you the breakdown on the specs. The Samsung site unfortunately doesn't list to HDMI type, but if you're buying a new 2016 model with HDR, it will most certainly have it.

My optoma HD65 is still working and giving a great picture so I don't think I can go back to a regular tv for movie watching. I've been waiting for Optoma to release their 4k projector, which they showed a demo of at a recent electronics show but no details yet. However, Epson is releasing four new projectors that do HDR and aren't exactly 4k, but simulate it and the 4k blu ray players will play on it. Here's the link:

Here's the most pertinent (to me anyway) info:

All four models feature the second generation of Epson's 4K Enhancement technology, which shifts each pixel in the 1920x1080 imagers by half a pixel diagonally to create a 3840x2160 image. This allows them to accept a UHD/4K input signal and display it at close-to-full resolution. Also included in this technology suite are Epson's Super Resolution and improved Detail Enhancement functions to sharpen the image.

Even better, these are the first Epson projectors that can accept and display high dynamic-range (HDR) signals using the open-standard HDR10 format, which is mandatory on all HDR Ultra HD Blu-ray discs. With a maximum luminance rating of 2500 white and color lumens (2300 white and color lumens for the Pro Cinema 4040), these specs are quite a bit higher than JVC's HDR-capable projectors, which max out at 1900 lumens. (As some members have pointed out, the actual peak luminance after calibration could be substantially less, but there's no way to know until someone does a real review.)

And most importantly: What about prices and availability? The Pro Cinema 4040 ($2699) and 6040UB ($3999) will be available through CEDIA and specialty retailers, while the Home Cinema 5040UB ($2999) and 5040UBe ($3299) will be sold by selected retailers, e-tailers, and the Epson online store. All will start shipping in August

Good info, thanks. I'm looking to spend $3-$4k on a good projector that will do 4K and HDR. I'm not paying $10k for a Sony. I'm keep my eyes peeled for these, I am very interested.

I'd rather have a 1080p laser pj than a 4k standard but I'll take anything at this point.

I'm the opposite really. Then again, it took me years to get a 3D 1080p. I love it, but I find myself using the 4K more. Hoping for the best of both worlds in the next 3-5 years.

I'm also hunting for a new projector and I will probably pick up the JVC RS400. Truth is 1080p resolution is already perfect for my 106' screen and no projector is going to throw out enough light to do HDR justice anyway. The biggest draw at this point is the expanded color IMO.
