Is there a way to get 5.1 sound from an input source on the DAV-S300? I was wondering if you could, say, get a newer DVD player and run it through the speaker system of the DAV-S300 and still get 5.1 sound. The DAV-S300 seems to only be able to come up with Pro-logic sound when playing from the input sources.
Thanks.

Upgradablility is this system's biggest weakness. I just checked my manual, and the DAV-S300 does have an optical in. I'm not sure if is what you would want. The manual says "the digital satellite receiver can be connected to the optical jack...the system can input both digital and analog signals..."
It seems like this input is for both video and audio.

The DAV-S300 comes with a pretty good DVD player. It does not output progressive-scan, but if you were going to go for that big of an upgrade, I guess you could afford to upgrade the speakers too. In my mind, the unfortunate part is that you can't use the DAV's DVD player and upgrade to a more powerful speaker system.

Yeah, it does lack upgradability. Oh well...Maybe in a couple of years when 16x9 sets start dropping in price, Sony will have a newer all-in-one DVD player/speaker system and I will be ready for a very nice upgrade. In the meantime, the DAV-S300 is still pretty damn convenient and cool-looking.

I second that -- I like this system a lot for a smallish apartment. I got it to supplement a 1992-vintage XBR2 that was then top-of-the line with integrated Dolby Surround, but now is a little bit lacking.

I'm re-watching all of my DVDs now to pick up the great sound.
